Day 1: Explore Antigua’s Heritage
Once you land in Guatemala and reach Antigua, take time to accommodate yourself at your lodgings and head out to the streets. First, get acquainted with the city. It’s a great walking city and there are tons of old churches to explore. Make sure to stop by the ruins of the old cathedral and learn a bit about its history. As you walk down the ancient cobblestone streets, keep your eyes wide open for the stunning colonial architecture, the volcano views, and plenty of photo-worthy opportunities. Make sure you stop at the Arco de Santa Catalina to snap a shot for Instagram.
By now, you’ve worked up an appetite. Stop by Frida’s for some fantastic tacos. You won’t regret it!
Day 2: Hobbit Village and Volcanoes
Grab breakfast at Bella Vista Coffee and start your day with views of the volcano. After breakfast, head off to Hobbitenango and Altamira. There is a cute hobbit village with amazing views, rope swings and tons of space for the kids to burn off energy and explore. There are also plenty of Instagrammable photo spots.
Day 3: Day Trip to Lake Atitlan
Hop in the car and head to Panajachel on Lake Atitlan. This is one of the true crown jewels of Guatemala, offering sprawling nature, spiritual retreats and a local feeling. Explore the markets and hop a boat to Santa Caterina Palopo, a town on the lake. Here you’ll find a place run by local women who will show you their handmade items for sale, dress you in traditional wear, and serve you lunch. Support the local community as this is the bread-and-butter. Lake Atitlan is just magical, and you might even want to spend the night there. If not, head back to Antigua.
Day 4: Hiking and Chocolate
Today is an active day. First, hike to Cerro de la Cruz and enjoy the views of Antigua. This is the place to stop, take a breath and admire the beauty of mother nature. Stop for lunch at Vice, then take the kids over to the Chocolate Museum. This is quite a fun spot for adults too. As Guatemala is one of the largest cacao exporters globally —learn about its gold. End the day with a meal in the courtyard at Restaurante del Arco.
