Things to do in Solvang

The iconic, family-owned Solvang Bakery—home to world-famous gingerbread houses
Visit the iconic Solvang Bakery
So, I’m admittedly biased. My sweet sorority sister owns the Solvang Bakery with her fabulous mama. But this means I’ve eaten here countless times. The onion bread. The Kringles. Oh, sweet heavens, the butter ring! You’ve seen their gorgeous gingerbread houses on The Today Show (I order one every year!), you’ve heard Kelly Ripa rave about sending them to family and friends, and you might have heard that a family of famous K sisters send them to one another for Christmas, Halloween, and Easter. But, as fabulous as the gingerbread houses are, the bakery and its lovely treats are even better. Plus, they have the cutest curated set of gifts. I send all of my friends and family there on their California road trips, and no one is ever disappointed.
Stroll the charming villages of Solvang, Los Olivos & Santa Ynez
Wander through the storybook streets of Solvang, where Danish charm meets California sunshine, and explore its quaint shops, bakeries, and tasting rooms. Who doesn’t love a little European flair with a side of California casual? Then, hop over to Los Olivos, the hidden gem where art galleries and cozy wine bars serve up the perfect mix of culture and relaxation—no need for a passport, just a wine glass. Finally, saunter into Santa Ynez, where cowboy spirit and small-town vibes collide and Bell Street’s boutiques and local eateries invite you to slow down and savor the moment—because, let’s be honest, you’ve earned it. Whether you’re sipping wine, nibbling on pastries, or just taking in the views, each village serves up its own slice of Central Coast magic.
Sip your way through paradise
The Santa Ynez Valley is home to some of the best wine tasting experiences, and trust me, you’re going to want to hit them all. Start at Sunstone Winery, where the Tuscan vibes and organic wines will have you feeling like you’re at a villa in Italy (without the jet lag). Then, roll into Fess Parker Winery for a laid-back vibe and wines that make you want to raise your glass a little higher. If you’re into boutique experiences, Liquid Farm and Rideau Vineyard are your go-to for small-batch wines and intimate tastings that feel like a VIP experience. And let’s not forget Stolpman Vineyards, where the wines are as bold as the views.
Explore Figueroa Mountain
From birdwatching to wildflower-spotting, Figueroa Mountain offers a refreshing escape where you can truly connect with the natural beauty of the valley. It’s the ideal way to get outdoors and enjoy some fresh air after indulging in the SYV’s incredible food and wine scene.
Places to eat & drink in Solvang

Enjoying the Landsby Courtyard after dinner at Mad & Vin
My favorites
Mad & Vin: We celebrated my dear friend’s 50th here (and she had her pick of the whole area), and it is a slice of heaven. Located in the Landsby hotel (one of my favorites!), they offer a refined menu in a space that is anything but pretentious. Have the cucumber crush cocktail—you’ll thank me.
Mattei’s Tavern: It started as a stagecoach stop, and then it was an under-the-radar hangout during the Prohibition era. Now it’s got a killer wine list and hearty dishes that celebrate local flavors. This place has it all: charm, food, and a great atmosphere.
Paula’s Pancake House: Going out for breakfast is one of my favorite things. This place is no-frills, all yum. Treat yourself.
Maverick Saloon: My college friends and I have spent some memorable nights at the Maverick. It’s got everything you want: Western-style saloon, live music, cold beers, and a vibe that makes you know you’ve stumbled onto something special.
SY Kitchen: If you’re looking for cozy Italian vibes, SY Kitchen is the place to be. The seasonal dishes are always spot-on, and the rustic charm of the space makes it feel like a warm, intimate escape. Every bite feels like a treat, and the atmosphere just pulls you in. Trust me, it’s one of those places you’ll want to return to again and again.
Worth mentioning
The Red Barn: A total hidden gem, serving up locally sourced meats and comfort food that’ll fill you up and make you feel right at home.
Pony: Effortlessly cool with craft cocktails and a laid-back atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where you can feel fancy without the fuss.
Bar La Cote: Wine lovers, this one’s for you. Gorgeous wines paired with Mediterranean bites, all served in a rustic yet stylish space.
Los Olivos Wine Merchant Café: A cute café and wine bar where you can sip local wines and enjoy California-inspired dishes with a dash of European flair.
The Solvang Restaurant: A cozy, old-school diner serving classic Danish dishes. It’s like stepping into a warm, welcoming slice of Denmark.
Need to know
Time zone: Solvang is in the Pacific Time Zone (PT), so keep that in mind for any travel logistics or virtual meetings.
Currency: The US dollar is the official currency. Credit cards are widely accepted, but it’s always good to have a little cash on hand for small purchases or at local markets.
Stay hydrated: The Santa Ynez Valley can get pretty warm, especially in summer, so be sure to drink plenty of water as you explore—especially if you’re wine tasting!
Casual chic: Solvang has a relaxed vibe, but you’ll want to dress comfortably for walking and sightseeing. Some of the wineries and restaurants lean a bit more upscale, so pack a nice outfit or two.
Bring sunglasses: The valley enjoys plenty of sunshine, so protect your eyes and look stylish while you’re exploring the charming streets.
Watch for wildlife: You might spot an ostrich or two (yes, really!) on your way to Solvang.
