Curator’s statement
Bluffton is a small, historic town in the South Carolina lowcountry – just outside of Hilton Head Island, S.C. but also close to Savannah, Ga. and Beaufort, S.C. Once known as a summer resort and then a retiree’s paradise, Bluffton is now a growing and thriving community for families and residents of all ages.
The town is perched on a bluff (for which it was named) above the May River. At its center is Old Town Bluffton, a quaint grid of streets lined with lush foliage and majestic, moss-draped trees. It’s a perfect mix of old and modern, with historic homes and sites alongside fashionable shops and a selection of casual and fine restaurants.
My family moved to the area in the 1960s, just as Hilton Head Island was developing into the resort location we know today. While I’ve seen Bluffton’s population (and popularity) boom in recent years, it has still preserved its small-town southern charm. Here are a few of my recommendations for a lovely getaway in Bluffton.

Things to do in Bluffton, SC
Stroll down Calhoun Street in Old Town, Bluffton:

Shop the latest fashions and accessories at the Spartina 449 flagship store (the brand was founded on nearby Daufuskie Island) and locally-owned Gigi’s Boutique.
Don’t miss a stop in at Eggs’n’tricities, or "Eggs" as the locals call it, for unique gifts and upcycled items!
Eat lunch, dinner or a snack at one of the many restaurants along this route (see Where to Eat section below for my favorites).
On Thursdays, visit the Bluffton Farmers Market for produce and local goods.
Learn about the history of Bluffton at the Heyward House Museum.
Step inside the uniquely beautiful Church of the Cross, which was built in the 1850s.
“Sit a spell” on the benches at Wright Family Park and admire the natural landscapes across the May River.
If you’re still in the mood to shop, I’d recommend visiting a few other Bluffton shops outside of the Old Town area:
Markel’s Card & Gift Shop is a local favorite for special gifts the most amazing, signature bows – definitely get your gift wrapped for the full experience.
At Olive the Above, you’ll find incredible fine olive oils and flavored balsamic vinegars, plus kitchenware and other local food gifts.
Bargain shoppers will surely find a deal at the Tanger Outlet centers – be sure to check out both Tanger 1 and Tanger 2!
For outdoor adventures:
Book fishing and river charters through May River Excursions.

Reconnect with nature at Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge.
Day trips
Hilton Head Island (20 minutes): Take a quick drive over the bridge and spend the day at one of the many beaches. Explore Harbor Town for shopping, restaurants or a dolphin cruise or learn more about the island’s rich history at the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn.
Savannah (30 minutes): A day trip to “The Hostess City” is a must for charming cobblestone streets, renovated pre-war homes, incredible food and a ghost story or five. Contact me if you’d like some Savannah recommendations!
Beaufort (40 minutes): There’s nothing like the marsh river views on the way from Bluffton to beautiful Beaufort. It’s been featured in many movies and TV shows, but those don’t do its beauty justice. During your day here, wander through the grand antebellum homes or historic ruins, shop along Bay Street, eat local seafood and admire the gorgeous riverfront vistas.
Charleston (2 hours): There’s so much to do in “the Holy City” that you may need more than a day. Charleston is beautiful, historic, vibrant and has a compelling food and cultural scene. Make sure to stroll along Rainbow Row and the Battery, pop in the shops on King Street, visit the Market and have some she-crab soup or other southern delicacies for lunch before you head home.
