Advisor - Celebrity Beyond: 11-Night Italy, Greece & Turkey Cruise Itinerary
Curator’s statement

The Celebrity Beyond cruise offers a rich and rewarding itinerary for travelers who appreciate both world-famous historical sites and the freedom to explore independently. Leveraging private guides and transportation allowed for a tailored experience, enabling the group to revisit favorite spots and discover lesser-known ruins at a leisurely pace. Favorite destinations include Ephesus—for its awe-inspiring, well-preserved ruins—and Ercolano (Herculaneum) for its intimacy and remarkable preservation compared to Pompeii.

Day 1: Katakolon (Olympia), Greece

Chelmousti Castle

Due to an itinerary change from Sicily, the cruise called upon Katakolon. Having visited the main archaeological site of Olympia before, an independent tour was arranged to the less-frequented Chlemoutsi Castle and some additional local Roman/Greek ruins of Elis, including the great, less-traveled Archaeological Museum of Ancient Elis that provided a quieter, off-the-beaten-path experience.

Key takeaway: While Katakolon is the gateway to the world-famous birthplace of the Olympic Games, Ancient Olympia, travelers with previous visits can easily arrange private transport to explore other historical sites and ruins in the wider region.

Day 2: Mykonos, Greece

"Little Venice"

  • Key experiences: A private, all-day tour allowed for a comprehensive look at the island.

  • Island tour: Visited "Billionaire Hill" for panoramic views and explored the quiet town of Ano Mera (especially tranquil on a Sunday).

  • Beach and port area: Experienced the popular beachside and spent the afternoon walking the port area, enjoying lunch, and soaking in the atmosphere.

  • Iconic sites: Walked around the famous Little Venice neighborhood, meandering the little streets and the visiting the historic windmills.

  • Travel tip: Mykonos is small enough to see quickly. If you've been before or prefer ancient history, consider taking a ferry from Mykonos to the nearby UNESCO World Heritage Site of Delos for its exceptional ancient ruins, an option highly recommended for a return visit.

Day 3: Piraeus (Athens), Greece

Acropolis

  • Key experiences: A first-time visit maximized with a full-day private tour focusing on monumental history.

  • Acropolis and Parthenon: Quite a hike to the top of the ancient site. Caution: The footing is challenging and uneven; those with walking difficulties should exercise extreme care. The summit offers stunning 360-degree views of the city on a clear day.

  • Acropolis Museum: Explored the ruins visible beneath the glass floor upon entry, then took a guided tour through the museum's exhibits. Recommendation: A private or small group guide is highly recommended for line-skipping and detailed historical context for highlights.

  • Driving tour: Stopped at the Panathenaic Stadium (site of the first modern Olympics) and the President's Mansion to watch the Changing of the Guard, along with Hadrian's Library and Temple of Zeus.

  • Temple of Poseidon (Sounion): This serene location, away from the city bustle, offered beautiful, peaceful views over the port and beach area, providing a quiet contrast to the crowded city center.

Days 4–5: Istanbul, Turkey (overnight port)

One of many mosques

Arrival day (day 1)

Arrived mid-day and started with a private guided tour.

  • Historical sites: Visited Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, as well as the surrounding areas.

  • Grand Bazaar: Explored the massive, bustling market, perfect for buying spices and Turkish delight.

  • Evening: Enjoyed a large dinner at a local restaurant. The overnight stay allowed for a full evening in the city.

Departure day (day 2)

  • Topkapi Palace: Spent the morning exploring the beautiful grounds, historic buildings, and views of Istanbul from the former royal residence.

When the ship departs, I recommend being on your balcony or Infinite Veranda or an outdoor deck as you pass under the bridge on the Bosphorous Strait.

Day 6: Kusadasi (Ephesus), Turkey

Ephesus

  • Key experiences: A deep dive into history and spirituality.

  • House of the Virgin Mary: Visited the small, very spiritual pilgrimage site, which has been visited by two popes. Travelers can leave a written wish on the wall.

  • Ephesus ancient city: Toured the stunning ruins, described as a mix of Pompeii and the Roman Forum. Highlights included walking the main road, seeing the remains of bathrooms and homes, and the magnificent Library of Celsus. The amphitheater has remarkable acoustics, still in use today.

  • Temple of Artemis: Visited the site of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Note: Sadly, very little remains of the original structure due to time and damage.

  • Overall impression: A favorite port; the scale and preservation of the ruins are amazing! Had a great meal at a local rug maker (skip the rug tour unless you want to buy a rug) and enjoyed the meal in the middle of the mountains of an orchard.

Day 7: Santorini (Thira), Greece

Santorini

  • Key experience: Having been to the island before, the focus shifted to seeing it from a different perspective: the sea! A great Greek barbecue was provided while we sailed around the beautiful blue waters.

  • Catamaran cruise: Hopped on a catamaran to enjoy the views of Santorini and Oia from the sea, including a stop at Thirasia island for a quick swim and a view of the volcanic beach.

  • Akrotiri ruins (Optional): Highly recommended for those interested in history, as the Minoan town ruins are incredibly well preserved.

  • Fira exploration: Took the funicular up to the main town of Fira and walked the many streets and alleyways for great views of not only the town but also the island landscape.

  • Departure: Opted to take the switchback walk (about 14 switchbacks) down to the port. Caution: The path is steep and the smooth stones can be slippery; wear good traction shoes, and be mindful of the donkeys and their presence on the path.

Day 8: Naples, Italy

Naples port

  • Key experiences: The final port of call focused on ancient history and metropolitan views.

  • Herculaneum (Ercolano): Hired a private driver for transport to this ancient Roman town, buried by Mount Vesuvius. It is smaller and less crowded than Pompeii, and notable for its superior preservation of tile work and multi-level homes.

  • Naples City: After a local lunch along the port road, the afternoon included walking the vibrant port area visiting Castel Nuovo (near the cruise port), Ovo Castle, and driving up to Castel Sant'Elmo for a spectacular view of Naples, Mount Vesuvius, and the harbor.

  • Travel tip: A private driver for Herculaneum/Ercolano was found to be more economical than a round-trip Uber ride—especially for a full day of touring—and also provided local suggestions.

Need to know

This cruise is a fantastic journey through antiquity and modern culture, offering a mix of iconic UNESCO World Heritage Sites, charming port towns, and vibrant cities. The pacing allows for in-depth, customizable exploration, with an emphasis on private tours for a more personalized experience.

Key highlights include the ancient ruins of Olympia and Ephesus, the bustling atmosphere of Istanbul, and the breathtaking scenery of the Greek Islands.
