Day 1: Arrival in Anchorage & The Glenn Highway Scenic Drive

Upon arrival in Anchorage, pick up your mid-size SUV rental and stock up on road trip essential snacks, drinks and fuel. Your journey begins on the Glenn Highway, which traces the stunning Knik Arm and offers breathtaking views of the 25-mile-long Knik Glacier. Keep your camera ready for glimpses of native wildlife, including moose, deer and bald eagles, commonly seen drinking from glacier runoff.
Day 2: Talkeetna – small town charm & big adventure

Travel north through the town of Gateway and continue on to the quirky and charming town of Talkeetna — famous for having elected a cat as its honorary mayor. Stop for breakfast at Conscious Coffee, then enjoy wandering the local artisan shops featuring handmade soaps, lotions, bug repellent and unique souvenirs.
While in Talkeetna, opt for an ATV excursion to a remote homestead established in the 1970s. This immersive experience offers insight into the true Alaskan lifestyle, far from the beaten path. While Talkeetna can get busy with visitors arriving by train from cruise land tours, you’ll enjoy the peaceful atmosphere from your own pace.

Day 3: Onward to Denali National Park

A park ranger will be available at the stopping point to provide guidance, trail information and safety tips for hiking or photography.
Day 6: Return drive with scenic stops

As you begin your return journey to Anchorage, consider stopping at photoworthy scenic overlooks and attractions you may have missed on the drive north. The freedom of a self-guided trip means every stop is yours to choose.
Day 7: Anchorage to Whittier – sweet treats & final adventures

Back in Anchorage, treat yourself to artisan ice cream at Wild Scoops, a beloved local creamery. Continue south toward the port in Whittier, but not before passing through Alyeska, a charming ski village with Bavarian-inspired architecture, cozy shops and a delightful bakery — perfect for a scenic stroll.
Your final thrill before reaching Whittier is the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, the longest highway tunnel in North America at 2.5 miles long. Once through, you’ll arrive at the port, ready for the next leg of your unforgettable Alaskan adventure.
