Advisor - The Mountains are Calling: A Couples Retreat to Lake Placid
Curator’s statement

Lake Placid was my home for 10 years and remains my home away from home. I was fortunate to spend many years working at the Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa while enjoying all of what this pristine Adirondack town had to offer. Filled with a welcoming community of tight-knit outdoor enthusiasts, winter sports icons, nature lovers, and relaxation seekers, Lake Placid is the ultimate getaway no matter the time of year but summer? Ahhh, summer is the most incredible time to visit this mountain gem. Pro tip: The town is on Mirror Lake, not Lake Placid!

Things to do in Lake Placid

Hiking: The Adirondack Mountains and surrounding areas are a haven for avid hikers. From easy nature hikes to scaling technical peaks, you are sure to find a trail that suits your abilities. For a short, easy nature hike, head to the Peninsula Trail, located just outside of town. This trail takes you to the beautiful shores of Lake Placid and is my favorite spot. If you are looking for a more strenuous hike, I encourage you to visit the High Peaks Information Center. They offer guided hikes (reservations must be made in advance as they fill up quickly). There are a lot of trails that range in difficulty.

Walk around Mirror Lake: This 2.7-mile paved “trail” is a daily must-do! A local exercise staple, this walk takes you through the quaint town and around the other lake with breath-taking views along the way. Very rarely do you come across anyone who isn’t smiling or offering a hearty hello. You can also step across the road to the actual Lake Placid.

Visit the Lake Placid Legacy Sites: Lake Placid is the site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games. Visit the Olympic Center, the site of the infamous 1980 hockey game when the US beat the Soviet Union and tell me you don’t get chills! Take the elevator to the top of the Olympic Ski Jumps for sweeping views of the Adirondack Mountains (and to wonder why in the world someone would jump off that ramp). Wander and hike around Mt Van Hoevenberg, and take a ride on the Cliffside Coaster. Pro tip—for thrill-seekers, return in the Winter for the unforgettable Bobsled experience. Lastly, take a stunning drive up the Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway. Whiteface Mountain was home to the 1980 Olympic alpine skiing events and is NY’s fifth highest peak.

Outdoor concert series: These free concerts are held every Tuesday (Songs at Mirror Lake) and Wednesday (Lake Placid Sinfonietta Park Series) from 7 – 9 pm, July and August at the Bandshell. Bring your lawn chairs for an unforgettable evening.

Shop Lake Placid’s Main Street: No visit would be complete without wandering through the lovely shops along Main Street. My favorite places are Adirondack Decorative Arts & Crafts. You will spend a lot of time in this shop that has many levels. You will find a wide variety of Adirondack art, fun housewares, and unique souvenirs. Imagination Station — check out their wide range of puzzles, games, gadgets, and souvenirs. Look for the player piano in the back of the store and above your head for the train. Bookstore Plus is always a must-stop on my list. Browse this Lake Placid icon for Adirondack guides, current Best Sellers, and unique gifts.

John Brown Farm State Historic Site: This is the home and gravesite of abolitionist, John Brown. It is a great place to visit with beautiful scenery, miles of trails and to learn more about John Brown’s historical significance.

Places to eat & drink in Lake Placid

The View Restaurant at the Mirror Lake Inn: The View is the only AAA four-diamond-rated restaurant in the area. With an incredible view of Mirror Lake and the Adirondack Mountains, this is the perfect place for a romantic dinner. The menu features a refined selection of modern American cuisine, including house made pastas, prime cuts, and elegant seafood.

The Cottage: The Cottage features a laid-back vibe overlooking Mirror Lake. There is nothing like enjoying a leisurely lunch on the deck or stopping in for your favorite cocktail. This is the local place where “everyone knows your name.”

Big Slide Brewery and Public House: Delicious Sunday brunch! Try the pumpkin pecan pancakes or the hangover helper. You will not regret it!

Lake Placid Pub & Brewery: My husband and I always find ourselves gravitating to this place multiple times per visit. The beer is excellent (try the Ubu ale) as is all the food selections. PJs, the downstairs bar, has been a Lake Placid favorite forever!

Need to know

Scenic drives abound in this area. Everywhere you turn there is beauty. Route 73 from Lake Placid to Keene is one of my favorite drives as you wind your way around Upper and Lower Cascade Lakes. On your way back to Lake Placid, you will get a wonderful glimpse of the ski jumps as they seemingly pop out of nowhere.

Consider returning during the fall and winter for a completely different Lake Placid experience!
