Curator’s statement
I grew up between France and Switzerland, right on the edge of Lac Léman, where my best summer memories were made. This destination is beautiful in the warmer months and remains under the radar for many international travelers, making it a great alternative to the classic Euro summer routes around the Mediterranean. With the growing popularity of lakeside holidays (Lake Como, we’re looking at you), Lac Léman offers all the charm without the crowds.

Things to do on Lake Léman

Take a boat across the border
Use the CGN ferry to hop between Swiss and French towns—it’s one of the most scenic and relaxing ways to travel. For something more private, charter a small boat and spend the day on the lake with a picnic, water sports, and local wine.
Explore the medieval village of Yvoire
On the French side, this postcard-perfect town offers cobbled streets, flower-covered balconies, lakefront cafés, and elevated local cuisine. Spend the afternoon wandering, ice cream in hand, or rent a paddleboat and enjoy the view from the water.
Go wine tasting in Lavaux
This UNESCO-protected vineyard region on the Swiss side offers breathtaking lake views and terraced vineyards. Walk or bike through the vines, then stop for tastings directly at the winemakers' doors.
Swim like a local at Les Bains des Pâquis
Located in Geneva, this no-frills lakeside bath is where locals go for an early morning dip, a casual fondue, or just to soak up the sun.
Stroll through Geneva
Wander Geneva’s elegant streets, from the historic Old Town to the lively Rive district and bohemian Carouge. Stop at Globus for gourmet picnic supplies and enjoy them lakeside at Jardin Anglais.
Catch a summer festival
In July, the Montreux Jazz Festival brings world-class performers to a stunning lakeside stage in Switzerland. Also not to miss: Paléo Festival in Nyon: Switzerland’s biggest open-air event (six days, around 250,000 people, eight stages, and more than 250 shows), with major international acts, street arts, and food stalls.
Places to eat & drink on Lake Léman

Jardins du Léman (Yvoire, France)
This romantic lakeside restaurant is known for elegant tasting menus and freshly caught local fish.
Gelateria Venezia (Nyon, Switzerland)
A beloved local spot serving creamy, house made gelato just steps from the lake. Perfect for a sweet break while wandering Nyon’s charming old town.
Auberge d’Hermance (Hermance, Switzerland)
A hidden spot in a peaceful village just outside Geneva. Expect refined French cuisine, thoughtful service, and one of the most romantic garden settings on the Swiss side.
Concrete (Geneva, Switzerland)
A lakeside cocktail bar offering a relaxed “buvette” vibe with stunning views.
Le Deck (Chexbres, Switzerland)
Perched above the lake in the Lavaux vineyards, this panoramic terrace is all about sipping local wine with a front-row seat to the Alps-meets-water scenery.
Need to know
When to go: June to early September is ideal—warm but not overly hot, with clear skies and active lake life.
Getting around: Renting a car is helpful, especially if you want to explore Lavaux or French towns, but trains and ferries are scenic and reliable on the Swiss side.
Food: Order the filets de perches, a fish dish with a butter and herb marinade that’s a regional staple; it’s best enjoyed with a glass of chilled local white wine and a side of crisp fries.
Tip: In France, say “Lac Léman” instead of “Lake Geneva”!
