Curator’s statement

Cozumel is a fantastic option for an international, but still close, long-weekend type of getaway. It's great for couples, families or multi-generational travelers as it's not too long of a flight and direct from some U.S. cities. Cozumel is known for having world-renowned diving, fabulous snorkeling, beautiful beaches and an array of sea creatures for the kids, such as sea turtles, dolphins and stingrays. Cozumel is a trip that could be taken year round, but for ideal weather and the lowest chance of rain, you may consider a March to May itinerary.

Things to do in Cozumel, Mexico

  • As a destination known for world-renowned scuba diving, this is the spot to do it! As a scuba diver myself, I would highly recommend doing as many dives toward the start of your trip as you can since you will want to give yourself at least a full day without a dive before flying home. Head out on a two-tank morning dive or for the less-experienced divers, try a Discover Scuba Diving Tour (a private 2.5-hour guided course).

  • For another water activity, try a Cozumel Reefs Snorkeling Tour. You'll be able to view underwater reefs and an array of marine life. You'll also have the opportunity to enjoy El Cielo, which is only reachable by boat. This tour is approximately 4 hours.

  • Experience Cozumel a different way with a Tortugas Jeep Adventure and ATV Jungle Experience. This tour will take you to the Eastern side of Cozumel with a stop for tequila tasting. You'll also have an opportunity to do a guided snorkel at the Tortugas Beach Club and explore the jungle by way of approximately 5.5 hours (ATV).

  • For more of a romance option, try a Mr. Sanchos Romantic Day Beach Pass for 2. This is a perfect option for those celebrating a special occasion. You'll have a private beach cabana and enjoy a couples massage with an all-you-can-eat food and drink menu.

  • For those traveling with children, take them to swim with the dolphins! The minimum age for this activity is six years old, but they can try a dolphin belly ride, kiss or hug. With your dolphin ticket, you'll also have access to Chankanaab National Park, which offers some amazing snorkeling and marine life.

  • Take a Stingray Encounter and Snorkel Eco Tour. The kiddos will love it! On this 2-hour snorkel tour, you'll have the opportunity to feed, pet the rays and/or snorkel, in addition to relaxing on the beach. The stingrays do not sting.

  • For more of an immersive cultural experience, try a Chocolate Workshop & Wine Tasting. You'll head to the beautiful stingray bay and make your own Cocoa bar on the beach while enjoying some red wine or a chocolate martini.

  • For the adventure lovers, try a Parasailing excursion. This is a thrilling activity with some amazing views of Cozumel from above.

  • For the experienced divers, you must try a 2-Tank Twilight Night Dive. This is an exciting night dive tour (approximately four hours) that leaves once the sun has set.

  • Experienced divers may also choose from an array of options, such as a Rescue Diver Course, a Deep Dive Specialty Course, a Divemaster Course or a Nitrox Specialty Dive. This is an absolutely fantastic location for any type of scuba diving you desire!

Several of the recommended accommodations are all-inclusive options, so you'll be dining primarily at your resort. If you'd like to leave your resort, I would encourage you to try the following:

Kondesa - This is a unique jungle-inspired seafood restaurant with hut and garden seating and delicious food.

La Cocay - A nice, very classy Mediterranean restaurant with excellent service and a mariachi band. Try a cucumber mojito!

Colores y Sabores - Head here for some delicious authentic Mexican cuisine.
