Curator’s statement
I was only able to spend a week going around to the national parks, and I barely scratched the surface of Washington. I expected to fall in love with the rugged coastline, but what really stole the show was getting to see Mt. Rainier’s peak during my Skyline Loop hike. I got really lucky with this trip and had wonderful weather. The variety of scenery in one state makes it so easy to get a fulfilling experience no matter where you are. All of the national parks are must-sees, but both Rainier and Olympic are busier than North Cascades. If you want to avoid the crowds and still get in mountains, then I suggest spending more time around the Cascades.

Things to do in Washington State

Devil’s Punch Bowl
Hike Mt. Storm King
This was a rugged hike, but so worth it in the end! The mileage was short, but the elevation change is what really slowed me down. The mountain sits right at the shore of Lake Crescent, and at the peak you have a 360-degree view of the lake. It was utterly breathtaking (both literally and figuratively—that thing is steep).
Paddle/swim Lake Crescent
Check out Devil’s Punch Bowl—a great inlet to do some rock jumping and enjoy the deep blue water. I had so much fun rock jumping and making new friends around the water hole. I’d recommend doing this after hiking or during the hottest part of the day, as the water was cool and refreshing.
Tide pooling
Highly recommend! This was such a fun way to spend a morning. I loved getting to experience the ocean in a new way and interact with all the little creatures.
Seattle’s Pike Place Market
Give yourself some time here—the place is massive! Filled with restaurants, shops, and hole-in-the-wall places, this iconic venue is a must-see if you are in Seattle. Definitely watch them toss fish, and make sure you go hungry—there is so much food to try!
Hot springs
There are several wonderful places around Washington where you can dip into hot springs, both natural and manmade. I spent an evening at one in Olympic National Park, which was a wonderful way to relax after hiking and swimming the day away. It is part of a resort that also has lodging and food.
Chihuly Garden & Glass
I am so in love with art, but specifically glass art. This was such a cool museum to see in person! They had a live glass-blowing demonstration and several videos of Chihuly and his process. I spent a few hours here wandering around and soaking in the variety of his work. This is in a really popular area of Seattle, so be sure to give yourself time to see the Space Needle and other museums as well.
Places to eat & drink in Washington State

Homemade kombucha at Owl & Cedar
Juice Box Pubic House
Right across the street from the boutique hotel I stayed at in Centralia. This was a great local spot to grab a drink or a well-made dinner. The bartenders were all very friendly, and the large space had several rooms to choose from. They also host several evening events!
The Station
Best coffee I had all trip! This huge coffee shop is definitely the place to stop for your caffeine fix or a place to gear up before heading out for the day.
Owl & Cedar
A miniature “tavern” on Centralia’s main street—a great option for those who want something non-alcoholic or just a place to gather.
Holy Grounds
Located in Centralia right next to a college, this spot has taken over a church. The basement is the main area where you can get coffee or breakfast, but it is also open later in the day for those who want dinner or drinks. Loved stopping in before heading off for the day. The service is quick, and the owner was right on site to chat.
Mondo
One of the food options in Marblemount, right outside of North Cascades National Park. Quick service and great food after a long day spent traveling or in the national park!
Upriver Grill & Taproom
Also found in Marblemount, this was a popular stop. A nice beer selection and a nice space, both indoors and out, to hang out.
Need to know
Pack several layers and rain gear. The weather changes quickly at altitude and rain rolls in on the coast frequently. Check to see when low tide is, and go at the peak of it to see all the cool stuff.
