Advisor - American in Spain: Favorites From Bilbao, Spain After One Year
Curator’s statement

After spending a year living in Bilbao, I fell for the place faster than I expected. Between the world-class food scene and the effortless, laid-back way of life, there’s a soul to this city that’s impossible to ignore. It’s a perfect mix of rich Basque culture and a welcoming vibe that makes you feel like a local from day one. I’m convinced that once you experience the rhythm of life here, you’ll never want to leave.

Things to do in Bilbao

  • The Guggenheim Museum: You honestly can’t miss this. The building itself is a total trip, and it’s the ultimate icon of the city’s modern side.

  • Pintxo crawl in Casco Viejo: Head to the Seven Streets and Plaza Nueva to experience the heart of Bilbao. It’s the best way to soak up the old-world charm while hopping from bar to bar.

  • Catch a game at San Mamés: Even if you aren’t a huge football fan, the atmosphere at “The Cathedral” is electric and gives you a real feel for how much this city loves its team.

  • Day trip to Bakio or Mundaka: These were my favorite escapes. Bakio is where I worked and has a great beach vibe, while Mundaka is world-famous for its surf and stunning views.

  • Shopping in Indautxu and Abando: If you need some retail therapy, these neighborhoods are the place to be, offering a mix of big-name brands and cool local boutiques.

  • Relax at Sopelana Beach: Just a short metro ride away, this spot is perfect if you want beautiful cliffs and a more laid-back coastal day without traveling too far.

Places to eat & drink in Bilbao

  • El Viejo Zortzi: Literally my favorite restaurant in the city. You have to try the mushroom carpaccio (I usually hate mushrooms and this is incredible), the stewed veal cheek, and the Spanish omelette au gratin.

  • Aitxu: If you’re looking for the ultimate Spanish tortilla, this is the spot. Their omelets are legendary.

  • ARVO Coffee and Plants: This cafe is such a vibe for a slow morning. My go-to is always the Tostada Uyuni.

  • Winston Churchill Pub: They serve up massive, high-quality drinks for around €11, which is a total steal for the quality and atmosphere you get.

  • NAP Pizza: My friends claim this is better than the pizza they’ve had in Italy. I’m not sure I’d go that far, but it is seriously good pizza.

Try the drinks. You have to grab a glass of Txakoli (local white wine) or a Tinto de Verano for something refreshing. Also, try a Kalimotxo at least once. It’s red wine and coke, which sounds weird and is super sweet, but it’s a total Basque staple.
