Things to do in Talladega, Alabama

Talladega, Alabama is best known for its legendary NASCAR Superspeedway, but there’s so much more to this destination than just fast cars and checkered flags. The atmosphere during race week is absolutely electric—from the roar of the engines to the energy around the campsites, it’s unlike any other sporting event out there. Fans become friends, the community comes alive, and the weekend feels like one big Southern-style celebration. Whether you’re a die-hard racing fan or just love an exciting, outdoor event with a welcoming crowd, Talladega is a destination that delivers on fun, connection, and memory-making.

For race fans looking to shop on a budget, Speedway Boulevard is lined with tents offering tons of merchandise—everything from current driver gear to vintage race collectibles—all at discounted prices. And the excitement doesn’t stop when the checkered flag waves. Just down the street from the Superspeedway is a local dirt track that hosts races all weekend long, giving visitors the chance to keep the adrenaline pumping well into the night. The infield is also packed with entertainment—from concerts to the brand-new rodeo event—making sure there’s always something going on for every type of fan.

If you’re looking to take a break from the track and explore the area, Cheaha State Park is a must-visit. It’s the highest point in Alabama and offers stunning views, peaceful hiking trails, and a true breath of fresh mountain air. For those who want an easier hike, Devil’s Den Falls is a great stopping point—a shorter, scenic hike that leads to a refreshing swimming spot that’s perfect for taking a dip or an epic cannon ball off the waterfall. For more active hikers, continuing up the mountain to Cheaha Falls is well worth the effort, rewarding you with incredible views and a sense of accomplishment.

Another can’t-miss stop inside the park is Bald Rock, one of the most scenic overlooks in Alabama. Visitors can take the accessible boardwalk for an easy, peaceful stroll or follow the carved rock paths for a bit more adventure. Kids will love climbing and exploring along the rocks, while those brave enough to venture to the edge will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the entire Talladega National Forest.

Just a short drive away, Majestic Caverns is another great stop, especially for families with young kids. The caverns are beautifully lit and easy to explore, offering a fun, educational experience for all ages. That said, if you’re looking for a more traditional cave exploration or “spelunking” experience, you might want to skip this one and instead check out Cathedral Caverns—it’s a bit of a drive from Talladega, but well worth the trip for adventurers who want a deeper dive underground.

And if you happen to visit in September or October, don’t miss the Haunted Chicken Coop, a rural weekend hot spot that’s perfect for the spooky season. It’s a local favorite for those who love a good scare—complete with that small-town charm and big Halloween energy that makes it worth the trip.

Places to eat & drink in Talladega, Alabama

When it comes to finding great food in Talladega, Alabama, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the variety of local favorites and Southern comfort options. One of the top spots in town is The Shack BBQ, a beloved local joint known for its smoky pulled pork, tender ribs, and hearty homemade sides—the kind of place where you’ll want to lick the sauce off your fingers. Another local favorite, Stampede Steakhouse & Catfish Corral, offers down-home cooking with generous portions, a relaxed atmosphere, and a menu packed with steaks, catfish, and all the classic Southern sides.

If you’re still craving barbecue, Campbell’s BBQ is another solid choice, offering slow-cooked meats and all the fixings for a satisfying meal before or after a day of exploring. For something a little more casual and family-friendly, Pop The Top Soda Shop serves up classic diner food, burgers, and ice cream treats that hit the spot on a hot Alabama day.

Meanwhile, La Posada Mexican Grill brings lively energy and flavorful Mexican fare, complete with margaritas and a fun atmosphere ideal for groups or families.

If you’re looking for a dependable breakfast spot or late-night bite, Huddle House is a go-to option. This classic diner chain serves hearty breakfasts, burgers, and comfort food in a laid-back setting—great for fueling up before a day at the track or on the trails.

Need to know

When visiting Cheaha State Park, there’s a small parking fee that can be purchased at the Welcome Center. This spot also doubles as a gift shop and information hub, so it’s worth a quick stop before you start exploring. The parking pass is valid for the entire day, so you can easily hike multiple trails or explore different viewpoints without worry.

If you’re heading to Devil’s Den Falls, there’s a separate $3 day-use parking area—but make sure to bring cash, as payment is dropped in an envelope system at the lot. The drive up the mountain is beautiful but can be challenging, with winding roads and several blind corners, so take your time and enjoy the scenery safely

Cell service is fairly reliable throughout most of the park and surrounding roads, but expect it to drop once you venture deeper into hiking trails or away from parking areas. It’s a good idea to download trail maps or directions in advance just in case.

For race fans or those seeking a true country camping experience, there’s a free campsite located right across from the Talladega Superspeedway. Camping is included with the purchase of a race ticket, and visitors can set up tents or bring campers. Keep in mind that this site is primitive—there are no water or electric hookups, so if you’re bringing a camper, make sure to bring a generator. The atmosphere here is unbeatable during race weekend, with friendly neighbors, campfire gatherings, and the sound of engines roaring in the distance.
