Advisor - Adventuring in Winter Wonderland of Banff, Kootenay & Yoho National Parks
Curator’s statement

Winter in Banff feels genuinely magical—quiet, snow-covered landscapes paired with unforgettable alpine experiences. From riding the Banff Gondola to the summit to snowshoeing through Johnston Canyon, every moment feels immersive and awe-inspiring. The contrast of outdoor adventure with relaxing stops like the spas at Post Hotel and Spa or Fairmont Banff Springs makes the experience even more special. With iconic scenery at Lake Louise and Emerald Lake, Banff delivers awe-inspiring moments at every turn.

Things to do in Banff

The Continental Divide and the border of Banff National Park and Kootenay National Park.

Snowshoe Marble Canyon and Paint Pots Connector in Kootenay National Park

One of the most beautiful and blue water canyons. Don’t forget to stop and enjoy the views and wildlife while you hike around the canyon.

Enjoy the hotels and lodges

The hotels and lodges are perfectly curated for your adventures and a place to return to rest, refuel, and enjoy incredible views and cuisine. The hotels listed in this guide are some of my favorites around the world, to which I will be returning.

Walk/hike/snowshoe Bow River Trail

A beautiful trail where you can observe wildlife, the river running (even in winter) and view some of the most beautiful peaks such as Rundle and Tunnel Mountain.

Banff Gondola

On a clear day, it is beautiful to look out over Banff and the valleys. The panoramic vistas from the observation deck are amazing to see in real life.

Yoho National Park and Johnston Canyon

Another incredible hike/snowshoe set of trails, where around most corners is another waterfall or river to admire. Stop at Emerald Lake Lodge for lunch and a meander around Emerald Lake after you finish your hike in Johnston Canyon.

Visit the Natural Bridge in Yoho National Park

It is a cool spot to go wander, but you can make it a short stop.

The Continental Divide between Banff National Park and Kootenay National Park

Visit and/or hike/snowshoe. The views, forest, and experience is well worth it!

Hike around Lake Louise

It is a beautiful lake nestled in the Canadian Rockies. Have lunch or a drink at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.

Places to eat & drink in Banff

Part of the Post Hotel and Spa’s wine cellar

  • Post Hotel and Spa Dining Room: They have incredibly delicious food and ask for a tour of their wine cellar (it is something to be experienced). Gluten-free was easily accommodated.

  • Fairmont Banff Springs 1888 Steakhouse: The steaks were incredible, the wine delicious, and the great ambiance of a steakhouse. It is especially easy if you are staying at Fairmont Banff Springs. Very easy to accommodate for gluten-free.

  • The Vermillion Room at Fairmont Banff Springs: Delicious food and easy accommodation for gluten-free.

  • Castello Italiana at Fairmont Banff Springs: Incredibly delicious Italian restaurant at Fairmont Banff. The restaurant easily accommodated for gluten-free.

  • Cilantro on the lake at Emerald Lake Lodge: Great location, but can get very busy in high season. Worth the wait and drive to experience Emerald Lake.

Need to know

  • Bring snacks and food with you while hiking in the national parks as there are not many conveniences and during high tourist seasons, it can take significantly longer to get to/from the trails.

  • Make reservations early for any “must dos” when it comes to the Gondola, accommodations, and restaurants/bars.

  • Carry bear spray while hiking in these National Parks; wildlife is very abundant.

  • Stay at the Fairmont Banff Springs for at least one night and Post Hotel and Spa for at least one night. They are very different, but such special places in the Banff area.

  • During the summer, make a reservation at Moraine Lake Lodge with a lakefront cabin. It will be the easiest way to get access (without a vehicle reservation or tour) to Moraine Lake. Make sure you get up for at least one sunrise—it is worth the early wake-up.
