A Port Day in Cozumel — Excursions & Activities

Snorkel or Scuba in Cozumel's Reefs

The southwestern part of the island is a national park, dedicated to the preservation of the coral reefs and marine wildlife near Cozumel. A dizzying array of marine life makes their home here, making this a bucket list destination for many divers. The water is clear almost every year, and the coral spawning season in August is when the reefs are at their most spectacular.

Chill out on an undeveloped beach

If you can handle a little extra sand, many of the beaches on the eastern side have very little development, but often are far less crowded than their counterparts on the east, but with choppier surf. Beach bars and restaurants dot the coastline on the main road, and some of them will have beach chairs for rent. If you rent an ATV, you can keep heading north after the main road ends, leading you to nearly untouched slices of paradise.

Snap an unforgettable pic at a cenote

Often used as natural swimming holes, these water-filled, limestone caves are one of Mexico's most unique features. With stalactites hanging from the ceiling and sunlight pouring in, the scenery in a cenote makes for an unforgettable memory that will make everyone back at home jealous when you return home.

Experience Mayan-style beekeeping

The Mayan Bee Sanctuary on the island is the home of numerous hives of Melipona Bees. These bees, unique to tropical America, have no stingers, making them completely safe to be around. These bees and their honey are sacred in Mayan culture. Sites like the Mayan Bee Sanctuary help preserve a way of life, as well as protect these vulnerable critters from deforestation.

Explore Mayan Ruins

The Island was an important destination in the Mayan religion, and hosts many archeological sites. The largest site, San Gervasio, was the sanctuary of the Mayan Fertility goddess Ix Chel. For those interested in pre-Columbian history and culture, this is a must see.

Spend a day in Punta Sur

At the southern end of the island lies Punta Sur Ecological Park. With a little something for everyone here, from beach clubs to mangroves. Rent a car, head south and Punta Sur will please the whole cruise squad.

Explore San Miguel

The main settlement on the island features a number of restaurants, shops and bars for those who don't want to brave the wilds of the island. There is no shortage of places to pick up good tequila, chocolate and other Mexican goodies in town.

Get a resort day pass

Not feeling like going too far? Many of Cozumel's beach resorts offer a day pass for cruise ship customers, food and drinks included. Mr. Sancho's is by far the most popular, coming highly recommended by cruise guests. Another, quieter option is Allegro, a few miles to the south. These day passes can sell out quickly, so book ahead.

Buccano's Grill and Beach Club: An upscale beach club that transforms into a fine dining establishment in the evening if you have a later stay. Cover charge applies during the day for access to club facilities.

No Name Bar: One of Cozumel's most unique bars. No Name isn't the most refined, but it is a popular spot for ships' crew to go to when they have time off in port. When you enter, you'll immediately notice the wall is covered with nametags from various cruise lines. When crew member contracts end, it is a tradition to leave their nametags here. A must see for cruise buffs. There's a pool and dock, so you're able to cool off too.

El Pescador: A Mexican seafood joint on Playa Chen Rio, on the east side of the island. This casual restaurant serves up freshly grilled fish and ice cold cocktails right on the beach.

Anémona de Mar: A beach club and restaurant inside Punta Sur with daybeds and lounge chairs available to rent, or sit in their shaded patio. Fresh, no frills Mexican cuisine, cervezas and cocktails.

Agave cocktail bar: A small, but well-stocked cocktail bar near the center of Cozumel. The best craft cocktails on the island.

Ko'oben lab: Scratch made Italian food, with a Mexican twist. A unique restaurant with locally brewed beers popular among both locals and tourists.

Casa Mission: As the name would suggest, this restaurant occupies an old mission house, surrounded by lush gardens, in the heart of San Miguel.
