Day 1: Bozeman, Montana

Bozeman, Montana is the perfect mix of mountain adventure and charming western town vibes, with incredible local restaurants, breweries, hiking trails, and stunning views in every direction. Exploring downtown Bozeman gives you a feel for Montana culture, while nearby outdoor activities like hiking, fly fishing, and soaking in hot springs make the area unforgettable. The drive from Bozeman to Ennis is one of the most scenic parts of the trip, winding through wide-open valleys, rivers, and mountain ranges that truly capture the beauty of Big Sky Country. Once in Ennis, the slower pace, small-town charm, local shops, and breathtaking views of the Madison Range create the perfect place to relax and experience authentic Montana.

Day 2: East Glacier

East Glacier offers some of the most breathtaking scenery and peaceful experiences in Glacier National Park, with dramatic mountains, turquoise lakes, and incredible wildlife around every corner. Driving Going-to-the-Sun Road from the east side gives you unforgettable panoramic views and access to iconic stops like Logan Pass, where you can hike scenic trails and often spot mountain goats or bighorn sheep. Spend time exploring Many Glacier, known for its stunning lakes, boat tours, hiking trails, and some of the best chances to see wildlife in the park. The east side also has a quieter, more rugged feel that makes it perfect for slowing down, taking in Montana’s natural beauty, and experiencing Glacier in a truly unforgettable way.

Day 3: Travel to West Glacier

Driving the Going-to-the-Sun Road from the east side of Glacier National Park to the west side is one of the most scenic drives in the country, with breathtaking mountain views, waterfalls, alpine lakes, and wildlife throughout the entire route. Starting on the east side, many travelers stop at St. Mary Lake and Wild Goose Island Overlook before making their way up toward Logan Pass, one of the most iconic areas in the park known for hiking trails and incredible panoramic views. Along the drive, stopping at places like Jackson Glacier Overlook, The Loop, and the Weeping Wall gives you opportunities to explore and take in Glacier’s dramatic landscapes up close. As you descend toward the west side, Lake McDonald offers crystal-clear water, colorful rocks, and a perfect place to relax after experiencing one of Montana’s most unforgettable drives.

Days 4-5: Big Fork, Montana

Big Fork is a charming lakeside town on the northeast shore of Flathead Lake, perfect for a relaxed but scenic stop in your Montana itinerary. Spend time wandering the downtown area filled with local art galleries, boutique shops, and waterfront restaurants overlooking the marina. Outdoor activities are a highlight here, from paddleboarding and boating on Flathead Lake to hiking nearby trails in the Swan River Valley and the stunning Jewel Basin. It’s also a great place to slow down, grab a lakeside meal, and watch the sunset over the water after a day of exploring.

Days 6-8: Ousel Falls to river fly fishing

In September, Big Sky is in a perfect “shoulder season” where the summer crowds are gone but the weather is still great for hiking, fishing, and exploring. It’s one of the best times to hike trails like Beehive Basin or Ousel Falls because the air is crisp, the fall colors start to show, and the mountains feel extra quiet and peaceful. You can still ride the lifts or explore higher elevations around Big Sky Resort for sweeping views without the winter rush. Fly fishing on the Gallatin River is especially beautiful in early fall, and evenings are perfect for cozy dinners, breweries, and watching the sunset over the mountains.

Need to know

First, plan for drive time to feel slower than expected. Distances that look short on a map between places like Bozeman, Ennis, Big Sky, and Glacier often take longer because you’ll want to stop constantly for views, wildlife, and photo pull-offs. Keeping your days a bit flexible makes the trip feel way more relaxed and less rushed.

Second, weather can change fast, especially in Glacier and higher elevations like Logan Pass on Going-to-the-Sun Road. Even in summer or early fall, bring layers, a warm jacket, and rain protection so you’re not caught off guard when temperatures drop quickly.

Third, book popular spots early if you can—especially lodging near Glacier, Big Sky, or lakefront areas around Flathead Lake. September is quieter than peak summer, but it’s still a popular time for hiking and scenic drives.

Finally, don’t overpack your itinerary. The biggest “miss” people make in Montana is trying to see too much in too little time. The best moments usually come from simple things—sitting by a lake, watching a sunset, or taking an unplanned detour when something looks interesting.
