Curator’s statement

Barcelona is one of those rare cities that makes traveling with kids feel easy and exciting. From colorful Gaudí architecture to beachside playgrounds and endless churros, there’s always something to spark their curiosity. I loved how walkable and laid-back it felt—perfect for exploring with kids of different ages. Whether you’re raising a future artist, a soccer fanatic, or just a kid who loves gelato, Barcelona has something for everyone (including parents).

Things to do in Barcelona

The ceiling of Sagrada Familia

  • Park Güell: Gaudí’s colorful wonderland feels like stepping into a storybook—and kids love it. There’s plenty of room to run around, explore mosaic lizards, and take in views of the city (without needing a museum voice).

  • La Sagrada Família: Even if your kids aren’t architecture buffs, this place is a must. The soaring towers and stained glass feel like a castle from another world—and the elevators to the top are a hit for adventurous older kids.

  • Barcelona Aquarium: Located in Port Vell, this aquarium is super walkable and stroller-friendly, with an underwater tunnel that makes it feel like you’re walking through the ocean. Great for a slower-paced day or escaping the afternoon heat.

  • Tibidabo Amusement Park: It’s a charming old-school amusement park on a hill with unbeatable views of the city. Rides range from gentle (for little ones) to exciting (for brave older siblings), and there’s even a vintage plane ride.

  • CosmoCaixa Science Museum: Hands-on, interactive, and surprisingly affordable. There’s a rainforest inside, a planetarium, and tons of exhibits where kids can touch and explore—ideal for curious minds and a rainy-day back-up.

  • Barceloneta Beach: Sometimes you just need a beach day. Pack a picnic or grab snacks from a nearby chiringuito (beach shack), and let the kids play while you soak up some sun—or at least sit down for five minutes.

  • Gothic Quarter Treasure Hunt: The winding streets of the Gothic Quarter feel like a real-life maze. Turn it into an adventure: give the kids little missions like spotting gargoyles, finding gelato, or saying “hola” to a street performer.

  • Camp Nou (FC Barcelona Stadium Tour): For soccer-loving kids (and parents), this tour is a dream—especially if you can catch a game. You’ll walk through the locker rooms, tunnel, and museum, and maybe even pick up a jersey on the way out.

  • Magic Fountain of Montjuïc: The evening light-and-water show is pure magic for kids (and free). Bring a blanket, let them stay up a little late, and enjoy the music and color under the stars.

  • Poble Espanyol: This open-air museum feels like a mini Spain, with replica buildings from different regions. Kids can roam around safely, explore craft shops, and try treats from all over the country—a fun, low-stress cultural stop.

Places to eat & drink in Barcelona

Pinxos

  • El Nacional: A beautiful, bustling food hall tucked away off Passeig de Gràcia with multiple restaurants under one roof—perfect for families who can’t agree on what to eat. Kids can try tapas or pasta, and grown-ups can sneak in a cava or vermouth.

  • Can Sole: This is one of the best spots in Barceloneta for classic paella—a must-try while in the city. It’s kid-friendly without being touristy, and the portions are generous enough to share.

  • Granja Viader: A historic café and chocolate shop that’s perfect for an afternoon treat. Order the suizo (hot chocolate with whipped cream) and churros—it’s basically heaven in a cup for kids and nostalgic bliss for adults.

  • Chök: This tiny doughnut shop near La Rambla is fun, fast, and a favorite with kids. Great for a mid-morning or post-park sugar boost—and they offer vegan and gluten-free options too.

  • La Pepita: A casual but stylish tapas bar in Eixample that welcomes families and serves creative twists on Spanish classics. If your kids are adventurous eaters, this is a fun one—if not, they still do a great grilled cheese.

  • La Fonda: Right in the Gothic Quarter, this is an easy win for families looking for solid, affordable local food in a nice setting. It’s busy but well-organized, and the menu del dia is a great value.

  • Cervecería Catalana: One of Barcelona’s most popular tapas bars, Cervecería Catalana is lively, casual, and perfect for families who want to share small plates. The bustling atmosphere and extensive menu keep everyone happy—from picky kids to adventurous parents.

  • Picnic: Located near Ciutadella Park, this brunch spot is casual, cheerful, and perfect after a morning at the park or zoo. Think pancakes, eggs, and smoothies—but elevated, and with great coffee for tired parents.

  • Turris: This bakery chain is all over the city and perfect for breakfast or snack stops. Their croissants, sandwiches, and cocas (Catalan flatbreads) are great for grab-and-go families on the move.

  • El Xampanyet: Just behind the Picasso Museum, this lively, old-school tapas bar serves house-made cava and small bites. It’s better for slightly older kids who can sit at a table and share plates—and parents will love the vibe.

Need to know

A great shopping street is Passeig de Gràcia. It has a more relaxed vibe, local shops, and is less touristy. Good for discovering smaller boutiques with character.
