Advisor - Cruising Without Barriers: A Mobility Disability Guide on Oasis and Icon Class Ships
Curator’s statement

Royal Caribbean is one of the most mobility-friendly cruise lines at sea, but the experience is best when accessibility is planned early and intentionally. The Oasis and Icon fleet offers accessible staterooms, step-free pathways, elevators, pool lifts, and select accessible shore excursions designed to reduce barriers at sea. With early planning, clear communication of mobility needs, and the right ship selection, guests can explore the world comfortably and confidently. Royal Caribbean’s commitment to accessibility allows travelers to focus less on logistics and more on making unforgettable memories.

Things to do

Step-free access, wide pathways, flexible seating, and calm layouts.

  • What to do first: Choose the Right Ship. Newer ships, Oasis and Icon classes, have the best accessibility with wider corridors, more elevators, fewer thresholds. Older ships are still accessible, but layouts may be tighter

  • Book an Accessible Stateroom early. Accessible staterooms are limited in number and are held for guests with disabilities first, and can be reassigned if the guest does not require accessibility features. Accessible cabins include: 5-foot wheelchair turning radius, roll-in shower with grab bars, lowered beds, closets, and controls, and wider doorways (sleeping and bathroom areas).

  • Guest Special Needs Form (CRITICAL STEP): This form is mandatory to receive accommodations. Submit this form no later than 30 days before sailing (60 days for ASL services). Pro tip: Submit form at the time of booking.

  • You can request: Mobility assistance, accessible stateroom confirmation, emergency evacuation info, pier assistance, and equipment coordination.

  • What Royal Caribbean provides: Complimentary wheelchair assistance, embarkation and disembarkation only, pier to ship and ship to pier, crew cannot lift guests.

  • Rentals can be delivered directly to the ship via approved vendors (like Scootaround). Request equipment at least 30 days in advance for best availability.

Places to eat & drink

With advance planning and smart venue choices, guests with mobility disabilities can dine comfortably, confidently, and without feeling limited.

  • On Royal Caribbean International Oasis Class and Icon Class ships, dining and lounge experiences are some of the most mobility-friendly at sea thanks to thoughtful ship design and spacious layouts.

  • The Main Dining Room is consistently one of the best options for guests with a mobility disability, offering step-free entry, wide aisles, wheelchair-accessible tables, and attentive service teams who are happy to accommodate seating and pacing needs.

  • The Windjammer Marketplace is also a strong choice on both classes, with its open floor plan, multiple entry points, and accessible seating throughout; visiting during off-peak hours makes navigation especially easy, and crew members can assist with trays when needed.

  • The Central Park neighborhood stands out as an excellent dining area for guests with mobility disabilities. Central Park is one of the most mobility-friendly neighborhoods at sea. The flat, outdoor promenade features smooth surfaces, generous spacing between tables, and a calmer atmosphere, making venues like specialty restaurants and nearby lounges easy to access and enjoy. Dining venues include: Chops Grille, 150 Central Park, and Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen.

  • On Icon Class ships, the AquaDome Market and AquaDome Lounge were designed with accessibility in mind from the start, featuring step-free pathways, elevators, and flexible seating that comfortably accommodates wheelchairs and scooters without feeling crowded or restrictive.

  • BONUS: Coastal Kitchen (Suite Guests). If staying in a Sky Class or Star Class suite: Reserved seating, quieter environment, very attentive service, and excellent accessibility and space between tables.

  • When it comes to lounges, venues with open seating concepts—such as piano bars, cocktail lounges, and promenade bars—tend to be the most comfortable and accessible. Boleros and Schooner Bar specifically have accessible design features. These spaces allow guests to reposition chairs as needed, avoid tight booth seating, and enter or exit easily during busy times.

  • Overall, Oasis and Icon Class ships offer a dining and lounge experience where guests with a mobility disability can relax, socialize, and enjoy world-class food and entertainment without feeling limited, rushed, or excluded.

  • Venues to approach with caution are Chef’s Table (varies by ship layout) and Royal Railway (Icon Class)—step and booth constraints.

Need to know

Emergency planning on Royal Caribbean International is thoughtfully designed to account for guests with a mobility disability while prioritizing safety and clear communication. Guests are asked to disclose mobility needs through the Special Needs Form, which allows onboard teams to plan appropriate assistance and note guests who may be unable to use stairs during an emergency. Crew members are trained to provide guidance, instructions, and support during drills and real emergencies, though they are not permitted to physically lift guests. By sharing mobility needs in advance and attending the mandatory safety drill, guests can feel confident that their needs are understood and incorporated into the ship’s emergency response plan.
