Curator’s statement
Newport, Rhode Island, is one of our family’s go-to spots for a quintessential New England coastal getaway. Newport really shines in the summer—think beach days, sunset sails, drinks on the lawn of Castle Hill Inn or roof deck of the Vanderbilt, music festivals, regattas, and sporting events. The restaurant scene and seasonal events at the historic mansions continue to draw visitors to the Classic Coast year-round.

Things to do in Newport, Rhode Island

Pack up for a day at First Beach, located at the start of the Cliff Walk. Grab a Del’s Lemonade while you take in the stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and Newport’s Gilded Age mansions. It’s worth touring a few, especially The Breakers (the summer “cottage” of the Vanderbilt family) during your stay. If you’re visiting in December, the mansion is beautifully decorated for the Christmas season.
Alternatively, you can take in views of the mansions and the Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge while sailing or cruising in Newport Harbor. Dine and shop in downtown Newport near Bowen’s Wharf.
Enjoy live music at one of the many summer concert series and festivals. The Newport Folk Festival, held at Fort Adams State Park in July, plays to a sold-out crowd, so buy your tickets and plan accommodations in advance.
The Hall of Fame Open is also hosted in July at the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
Have a picnic while enjoying the Newport International Polo Series, which takes place every Saturday from June to September.
Take in collegiate summer baseball while cheering on the Gulls at Cardines Field, one of the oldest baseball stadiums in the country.
Places to eat & drink in Newport, Rhode Island

The Mooring Seafood Kitchen & Bar is located right on the water in Sayers Wharf and offers both indoor and outdoor patio dining. The nautical vibe carries over from the wharf to the interiors. I can’t remember exactly what we ordered on our last visit, but our plates were completely empty.
The Lawn Terrace at Castle Hill Inn is another sought-after spot with waterfront views. Relax in the iconic adirondack chairs and watch the sailboats go by.
Bar ‘Cino and Pasta Beach are two of my go-to spots for Italian food. It’s always hard to decide between the shared plates, pasta, and pizza. Giusto has been on my radar for a while now.
Belle’s, located in the Newport Shipyard, is ideal for brunch and viewing the luxury yachts and sailboats docked in the harbor.
