Things to do in Puerto Escondido

La Punta
Puerto Escondido is a hidden gem (though not so hidden anymore) in Oaxaca.
This beach town has its own airport and is also accessible by road, making it easy to reach. It offers a laid-back, welcoming, community vibe—something like a real-life hakuna matata. As soon as you arrive, take a deep breath of the salty ocean air and feel the breeze, often carrying a bit of sand with it.
Puerto Escondido is perfect for relaxing by the sea, listening to the sound of the waves and the birds above. Just remember to bring your own towel or beach umbrella, as most hotels don’t provide them—though you can rent them at many beach clubs for an affordable price.
It’s also a surfer’s paradise, famous for its big waves and numerous surf schools that will guide you through everything you need to know to ride them. In September, you can take part in releasing baby turtles back into the ocean (though this magical experience can happen in other months, too—just less frequently).
At night, head to Manialtepec Lagoon to witness the breathtaking bioluminescence or take a hike or short drive to Punta Cometa for one of the most stunning sunsets you’ll ever see.
During the right season, you can also hop on a boat tour to spot incredible marine life—whales, turtles, and dolphins often make an appearance in these waters.
Places to eat & drink in Puerto Escondido

Fish Shack La Punta
Puerto Escondido has grown a lot over the years, and it feels like there’s a new restaurant, bar, or café popping up every day. Still, there are a few spots you simply can’t miss. La Punta is definitely where you’ll find the best of them.
If you’re a cold brew addict like me, head to Café Blasón—and don’t skip the banana bread (it’s a must). For a traditional Oaxacan breakfast, NATIVO is the place to go. And if you’re craving something healthy and delicious, Piyoli has you covered.
For lunch or dinner, I highly recommend Fish Shack La Punta—I always have to order the fish and chips, I absolutely love them.
For dessert, make your way to Moringa Fresh & Wild, a small organic boutique full of things you’ll want to take home with you. And trust me, they have the best banana bread in La Punta—no contest.
For dinner, Puerto has something for every craving. If you’re in the mood for pasta or pizza, Mundaka Pizzas & Cocktails is a great pick—sometimes there’s a bit of a wait, but it’s totally worth it. Lychee Thai Food is another super popular (and delicious!) option if you’re craving bold flavors. If you’re looking for something fresh and light, Chicama—a Peruvian restaurant—is a fantastic choice. And for a classic, flavorful burger, Alaburger hits the spot every time.
And of course, you’re in Oaxaca—so you have to end the night with a good mezcal. I personally love Juana Mezcala for its great vibes, cold beers, and really good mezcal.
Need to know
Puerto Escondido is for those who love a laid-back, no-fuss lifestyle without too many luxuries.
It’s full of people from all over the world, but it’s the warmth of the Oaxacan locals that truly makes it special.
If you’re afraid of dogs, this might not be the place for you—there are quite a few roaming the streets.
A good sunscreen and mosquito repellent will definitely be your best friends while you’re here.
Puerto Escondido isn’t just a beach—it’s a vibe, a rhythm, a little corner of Oaxaca that invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and enjoy the simple things. Whether you’re chasing waves, sipping mezcal under the stars, or just lying in the sand with nowhere else to be, this place has a way of staying with you long after you leave.
Come with an open heart and a bit of curiosity—and don’t forget your towel.
