Curator’s statement
Hilton Head Island is the kind of place that rewards slowing down—an island shaped by deep Lowcountry history, layered cultures, and a long relationship with the sea. What began as Gullah Geechee land and later a quiet coastal retreat has evolved into a destination where preserved nature, thoughtful design, and understated luxury coexist. After spending several months here, my husband and I came to know Hilton Head beyond the highlights. This guide brings together our favorite things to do, places to eat and drink, and pockets of history that give the island its soul—meant for couples who appreciate beautiful settings, meaningful stories, and the pleasure of doing things slowly.

Things to do in Hilton Head, SC

Beach walk or run: Early mornings or low tide offer the most peaceful way to experience Hilton Head, with wide, flat beaches perfect for long walks or an easy run. It’s a simple ritual that never loses its magic.
Daufuskie Island: A short ferry ride away, Daufuskie feels like stepping back in time, with quiet roads, rich Gullah Geechee history, and an unhurried pace. Rent a golf cart and spend the day exploring at your own speed. If you’re a fan of author Pat Conroy, see the Mary Field School where he taught and later wrote about his experiences in “The Water is Wide.”
Helicopter tour: Seeing Hilton Head from above offers a completely different perspective, revealing the island’s natural beauty and carefully preserved landscape. It’s a memorable splurge that feels both thrilling and intimate.
Rent bikes: Biking is the best way to move around the island, whether you’re cruising shaded trails or riding along the beach at low tide. It’s effortless, scenic, and very much a part of island life.
Coastal Carolina Arts Center: We were impressed by the quality of productions here—performances that consistently exceeded our expectations for a small arts center. It’s an unexpected highlight and a wonderful way to spend a few hours away from the beach.
Farmers and artisan markets: Local markets are a great way to sample the island’s creative side, from fresh produce to handmade goods. In my opinion, the best market is at Shelter Cove on Saturday mornings.
Bluffton: Bluffton’s historic district offers a glimpse into the Lowcountry’s past, with centuries-old homes, river views, and the iconic Church of the Cross anchoring the town. It’s a lovely place to wander, learn a bit of history, and enjoy the slower pace that defines the region.
Beaufort history tour by golf cart: Just over an hour away, Beaufort is worth a day trip for its historic charm, waterfront streets, and Southern architecture. This guided tour offers a thoughtful introduction to Beaufort’s layered past, told through historic homes, river views, and local stories.
Places to eat & drink in Hilton Head, SC

Enjoy sunset views over Skull Creek at Skull Creek Dockside.
The Jazz Corner: My favorite place for an elevated night out. There are two live jazz shows with accompanying dinner times each night. Reservations are a must! This is a perfect spot for those who appreciate good music, craft cocktails, and a soulful atmosphere.
The Bank: Housed in a historic former bank, this spot features craft beers from Side Hustle Brewing, a complete cocktail and wine list, and lots of food options from pizza to burgers. The outdoor space is huge with fire pits, lawn games, and plenty of chairs to hang out under the trees. This is our favorite spot to enjoy happy hour!
Hilton Head Distillery: A small-batch distillery offering tastings of locally crafted spirits with coastal character. You can take a tour of the distillery or just cozy up to the bar and try one of their unique cocktails!
The Salty Dog: A Hilton Head icon known for its waterfront views, nautical charm, and lively energy. Casual and fun, it’s a classic stop for sunset drinks. If the weather is nice, enjoy sitting on the large outdoor deck overlooking the marina.
The French Bakery: Charming and authentic, this bakery delivers flaky croissants, pastries, and café classics that feel straight out of Paris. A perfect stop for a slower-paced breakfast or lunch. Be sure to stop at the pastry case on your way out and pick up a treat for later!
Stu’s Surfside Subs: A popular, no-frills sandwich shop located in Coligny Plaza. I recommend calling in your order, picking it up, and taking it to the beach to enjoy.
Skull Creek Dockside: A lively waterfront favorite known for fresh seafood, colorful cocktails, and sweeping sunset views over Skull Creek. It’s an easygoing yet memorable spot to enjoy the Lowcountry atmosphere with front-row seats to the water.
Burnt Church Distillery: This distillery in Bluffton offers handcrafted spirits inspired by Lowcountry history and storytelling. They offer distillery tours, tasting flights, and mixology classes. Their food is also superb!
Need to know
Come during the off season: April to May or September to October. The island is less crowded, but the air and the water are still warm. You’ll have access to all of the things that make Hilton Head great but without the traffic and crowds.
Respect the island’s history and environment. The dunes, wildlife, and Gullah Geechee heritage are deeply protected and integral to what makes Hilton Head so special.
Early mornings are special here—peaceful, uncrowded, and rewarded with beautiful sunrises. If you’re headed out for a morning beach walk, pay attention to the tide schedule. Low tide offers expansive beaches perfect for long walks, while high tide brings the water closer and creates a more intimate shoreline.
