Advisor - Porto Ercole: The Chic Seaside Escape
Curator’s statement

This charming town on the Monte Argentario peninsula is a must-visit for those starting or ending a cruise in Rome or as a long weekend or add-on to time in Rome or Florence. It offers an authentic, laid-back fishing village atmosphere with high-end properties with excellent cuisine and seaside activities. Perfect for foodies, wine enthusiasts, and nature lovers, it allows you to savor Tuscan cuisine, sip local wines, relax on beaches, swim, sail, explore nature, and shop in authentic Italian villages like Orbetello and Capalbio. My husband and I found it to be the ideal few days after a busy week of cruising the Mediterranean with friends. The stunning views, combined with hikes to Spanish fortresses, a boat trip to Giglio island, and delicious food, wine, and shopping, made it the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy the true essence of the Italian coast without the crowds.

Things to do in Porto Ercole, Italy

Rent a motorboat or sailboat to explore the coastline and nearby islands

  • Spend a day at the airy and chic Isolotto Beach Club, nestled in a secluded bay where you can relax on teak sunbeds, swim in the refreshing sea, and enjoy incredible cocktails and seasonal and locally sourced dishes at the club’s posh outdoor restaurant. Patrons of La Roqqa hotel have free access and shuttle service to this club located walking distance from the boutique hotel others can pay to spend the day.

  • Explore the beautiful port town of Porto Ercole, where local restaurants and boutiques line the cobblestone streets with views of the sea surrounded by yachts and fishing boats. Dine in one of the many small trattorias and osterias featuring local seafood and Tuscan specialties as you watch the sunset against the harbor.

  • Directly above the old town, climb the ancient step hills to explore 16th-century historical Spanish fortresses such as Forte Filipino, Rocco Spagnola, and Forte Stella to enjoy spectacular views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and get a glimpse of the past.

  • Explore and shop in the nearby town of Orbetello, perched along a narrow strip of land surrounded by water with charming shops. Visit the Duomo of Santa Maria Assunta or the Museo Civico Archeologico (Archaeological Museum). Enjoy the beautiful views of this charming town, surrounded by water, Monte Argentario hills in the distance, with the sea just beyond.

  • Consider visiting nearby islands from a rented motorboat or sailboat. From a boat, you can easily enjoy swimming in caves and inlets, cliff diving, snorkeling, and enjoying the delicious Mediterranean Sea. Or join a local fisherman for a half or full-day fishing adventure.

  • Enjoy a sunset aperitivo on the airy, panoramic rooftop of the stylish La Roqqa hotel at Scirocco restaurant with stunning views of the harbor. Enjoy inventive cocktails such as their signature “white Negroni” or stay for dinner and enjoy delicious dishes such as “Speghetti 8 Pomodori” made from eight tomato varieties from their local garden.

  • Tour local wineries and farms such as Cantina Santa Lucia and La Parrina, where you can arrange a private wine and cheese tasting and purchase fresh produce, olive oil, and jams from their farm store and visit the farm animals. Enjoy the natural beauty and tranquility of these gorgeous estates.

  • Enjoy a mind-blowing meal at the famous Il Pellicano restaurant by Michelin star chef Michelino Giovanni in a refined and romantic seaside location.

  • Rent a bike, or e-bike and explore the Monte Argentario area. This will make navigating this windy terrain effortless as you can take in the breathtaking views. Explore the charming villages, forests, peaceful lagoons, and dramatic cliffs overlooking the sea.

Need to know

I would recommend having a rental car when staying in this area to have easy access to local wineries and villages.

If renting a motorboat or sailboat is not in your budget, consider taking the ferry to nearby islands to experience the area by sea.

The famous baroque painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio spent his final days in Porto Ercole and died there at the age of 39.

What makes this town so charming is that while it attracts stylish visitors and travelers on their fancy yachts, it is a very authentic Italian Tuscan town that is filled with fisherman and locals hanging out and enjoying time together. Take time to people-watch and meet with the Italian locals who make this seaside village the magical, unforgettable port town that it is.
