Things to do in Railay

Phra Nang Beach
Why Railay is so special
Though it’s technically part of the mainland, Railay is only accessible by boat, making it feel like a true island escape. This little slice of paradise is nestled between Ao Nang and Krabi Town, surrounded by the kind of jaw-dropping karst cliffs and turquoise waters you usually only see on postcards. It’s compact, walkable, and has no roads or cars, just sandy pathways winding through jungle and beach.
What makes Railay especially ideal for couples? The blend of adventure and romance. You can spend your mornings climbing or kayaking together, then relax with a beachfront massage or sunset cocktail in the evening. It’s laid-back, lush, and full of little moments that feel cinematic.
Top things to do in Railay
Watch the sunset on Phra Nang Beach: Arguably one of Thailand’s most beautiful beaches, Phra Nang is perfect for watching the sky turn sherbet-pink while the limestone cliffs cast dramatic shadows. Bring a blanket and some snacks for a DIY beach picnic.
Kayak around the peninsula: Rent a kayak from Railay West and paddle around the cliffs and sea caves together. It’s peaceful, beautiful, and gives you a new perspective of the landscape (plus, it’s a great couples bonding activity!).
Rock climbing for beginners (or pros!): Railay is world-famous for its rock climbing, and even if you’re total beginners, there are beginner-friendly routes and great instructors available. It’s a thrill (and kind of romantic) to cheer each other on from the cliffs.
Hike to the Railay Viewpoint & Hidden Lagoon: This short (but steep) hike takes you up to a stunning viewpoint overlooking both Railay East and West. Adventurous couples can continue to the secret lagoon for a quiet, wild-swim moment.
Longtail boat tour to the Four Islands: Hire a private longtail boat for the day and explore nearby islands like Chicken Island, Poda, and Tup. Pack a cooler and your snorkel gear, these spots are ideal for lounging and swimming hand-in-hand in shallow waters.
Couple’s massage with a sea breeze: There are massage spots dotted along Railay East and West, but the open-air huts on Railay Beach offer massages with the sound of the ocean in the background. Affordable luxury at its best.
Night strolls on Railay’s walking street: After dinner, take a romantic stroll under fairy lights and lanterns strung along the main walking path. It’s full of small shops, snack stands, and live music bars that come alive after sunset.
Explore Phra Nang Cave (aka Princess Cave): This cave is home to offerings left for a local sea spirit. You’ll see statues and incense nestled into the rock. It’s a quirky but cool spot that sparks curiosity and a good story to share.
Places to eat & drink in Railay

Railay Walking Street
The Grotto at Rayavadee: Dine in a cave at this luxury resort restaurant tucked into the cliffs of Phra Nang Beach. It’s a splurge, but the romantic setting is hard to beat. Perfect for honeymooners or a special night out.
Railay Family Restaurant: Don’t let the name fool you. This place is cozy, affordable, and great for casual Thai meals. Try the massaman curry or pad see ew. Bonus: friendly staff and quick service.
Kohinoor Indian Restaurant: For couples who crave something different, this hidden gem serves up seriously flavorful Indian food. It’s tucked along the East side, ideal for a lowkey dinner with bold flavors.
Flame Tree Restaurant & Bar: A mellow spot with great cocktails and comfort food, from pastas to grilled seafood. The romantic vibe is elevated by soft lighting and a chill reggae soundtrack.
Tew Lay Bar: For drinks with a view, head to this rustic bar perched on the rocks above Railay East. Grab a mojito or coconut shake and soak up the panoramic ocean views. It’s quiet, relaxed, and oh-so-romantic at golden hour. Good to know: This restaurant is located away from the main walking street and can feel like a bit of a trek for some, especially at night. But SO worth it.
Mangrove Restaurant: Set slightly away from the beach, this place is surrounded by lush greenery and candlelight—making it perfect for a quiet, nature-framed dinner. Their grilled seafood platters are a must.
Need to know
How to get there: Railay can’t be accessed by car. You’ll need to take a longtail boat from Ao Nang or Krabi. It’s part of the adventure and sets the tone for a peaceful stay.
Where to stay: For honeymoon vibes, I recommend Rayavadee Resort (luxury and iconic) or Bhu Nga Thani (great value with upscale comfort). Sand Sea Resort is more affordable and nestled on the highly demanded West Railay beach.
Best time to visit: November through April offers the best weather: dry, sunny, and perfect for beach days.
Cash is king: While many places now take cards, it’s best to bring cash for small meals, massages, and boat rides.
Pack light: There are no paved roads or cars, so you’ll be walking or boating everywhere. Wheeled luggage isn’t your friend here!
Expect nature: Railay is stunning and serene, but also a bit wild: monkeys, tropical sounds, and occasional power flickers are part of the charm.
If you’re dreaming up a Thailand trip, Railay is one spot I always recommend, especially for couples. It’s chill, stunning, and full of little moments that just feel special.
