Advisor - Cardiff & Southern Wales for a Long Weekend
Curator’s statement

Cardiff is a compact capital city, but it manages to pack in an impressive amount of culture, nightlife, and attractions. Visitors can wander the historic old town, centered around the iconic Cardiff Castle, and then head just a short distance to the beautiful, modern Cardiff Bay. Its small size makes it easy to explore on foot while still offering the energy and variety of a larger city. Cardiff also serves as an ideal jumping-off point for discovering the rest of southern Wales, from rugged coastlines to charming towns.

Things to do in Cardiff

Caerphilly Castle

  • Explore Cardiff Castle, located right in the heart of the city, this stone fortification creates a fun contrast against Principality Stadium. Afterwards, take a stroll through Bute Park behind the castle and grab the boat to the bay.

  • Walk along Cardiff Bay, where waterfront paths, restaurants, and cultural landmarks offer a relaxing yet vibrant seaside atmosphere.

  • Take a day trip to Rhossili, voted one of Britain’s most breathtaking beaches, with dramatic cliffs and sweeping coastal views. Be on the lookout for wild horses!

  • Venture to the Brecon, a quaint town considered to be one of the most beautiful in Wales. Wander along the canal trail for a scenic walk through the countryside.

  • Discover some of the oldest and most impressive castles in Wales, including the massive Caerphilly Castle with its own leaning tower, and the beautifully preserved Chepstow Castle, home to the oldest castle door in Europe.

Places to eat & drink in Cardiff

  • Mad Dog Brewery, enjoy some craft beer with a stunning castle view.

  • The Botanist Cardiff Bay, a chic and lively dining spot located right on the bay.

  • The Cardiff Market, wander among the stalls of this indoor market. Make sure to grab a Welsh cake for a traditional treat!

  • The Packet, a quintessential pub that only serves drinks, make sure to try a pint of Brains Beer.

  • The Potted Pig, try some Welsh dishes in this former bank vault.

  • Zerodegrees Microbrewery, try some local beer alongside a delicious wood-oven fired pizza.

Need to know

I took the train from London to Cardiff, but flying into Bristol is another inexpensive and convenient option.
