Advisor - The Best of Trieste, Italy, in 3 Days
Curator’s statement

Within a stone's throw of Venice is a truly unique Italian port city where Italian, Austrian, and Slavic cultural influences blend seamlessly, giving it a rich mix of architecture, cuisine, and culture. Trieste offers beautiful seaside promenades, historic squares, and its coffee culture (it's actually referred to as Italy's coffee capital). Trieste is small enough that you can explore the main highlights in two or three days, which is why it is the perfect city to stay pre- or post-cruise.

Where to stay

Unlock perks by contacting Jennifer to book your trip.

Day 1: Piazza Unità d’Italia, Canal Grande & San Giusto

Canal Grande, Trieste

Explore Piazza Unità d’Italia, the largest seafront square in Europe. Here you can admire the architecture and enjoy the sea views.

A short walk along the promenade leads you to the Canal Grande. This picturesque area is the perfect place to experience Trieste’s famous coffee culture. Stop at Caffè degli Specchi or Caffè Tommaseo for the perfect caffè espresso.

Head to the hill of San Giusto. At the bottom of the hill, you can enjoy the ruins of the Teatro Romano. Next, head up to Castello di San Giusto for the best views of the entire city and sea.

For dinner, enjoy a seafood dinner at a local osteria like Ristorante Antico Spazzacamino.

Day 2: Il Castello di Miramare & Barcola Promenade

Castello di Miramare

Head to Il Castello di Miramare. Enjoy the beautiful sculpture gardens surrounding the castle and overlooking the Gulf of Trieste. You can tour the inside of the castle on a self-guided tour or simply enjoy the grounds.

After, head to the Barcola Promenade. Spend the afternoon sunbathing with locals or grab an aperitivo at one of the many bars.

For dinner, enjoy some fresh seafood at PURO - Piacere Unico Ristoro Originale in the lively Via Torino area.

Day 3: Karst Region & Grotta Gigante

Vineyards

Just above Trieste is one of the world’s largest accessible caves. Take a tour or just enjoy the views of the limestone plateau.

Find a osmiza afterwards to enjoy local wine and cured meats. Local farmers open to serve whatever they raise or grow for several days. The farmers work on a rotation so every week is a different location.

In the afternoon, enjoy the Friuli wine region. Tour local vineyards to taste some of the best Friulano wines.

Need to know

A car is great to have if you want to explore the areas outside of the city, including the Karst plateau, vineyards, or nearby towns like Muggia. The city area is easily accessible via walking and public transportation.
