Things to do in Edinburgh

Arthur's Seat Hike, photo by Beni DiVasta

  • Arthur’s Seat Hike: This is a must-do in Edinburgh. Arthur’s Seat Hike is a semi-challenging but short hike up to gain a stunning view of Edinburgh in its entirety. The full hike takes around 1–2 hours, but plan to spend extra time enjoying the views and getting lots of pictures from the top.

  • Dean’s Village: On the other side of the city from Edinburgh’s Old Town lies Dean’s Village. Walking through it feels like stepping into a fairytale. The streets are cobblestone and take you along a canal with lots of quaint bridges and by colorful houses.

  • Edinburgh Castle: Full of history and medieval architecture, Edinburgh Castle is a must-see. It also marks the beginning of the Royal Mile, so come to the castle and learn about Edinburgh’s history before embarking on the Royal Mile.

  • Royal Mile: This is a famous street in Edinburgh with tons of tourist shops, restaurants, and more. Starting at Edinburgh Castle and leading you through the main part of the city down to Holyrood House.

  • The Real Mary King’s Close: At the other end of the Royal Mile is The Real Mary King’s Close. Here is the site for lots of history surrounding Scotland’s royal family. The grounds are also gorgeous and well-maintained.

  • Dean Village Scottish Parliament Building: This was an interesting stop. The building offers free admission and has a small museum to walk around and learn about the history of Scotland’s Parliament.

  • Victoria Street: This is the street that Diagon Alley was famously inspired by, and you can absolutely tell the resemblance. Right in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, walking down the street and checking out the local shops and restaurants is delightful while in Edinburgh!

  • The Writer’s Museum: For any writers or book-lovers, check out the Writer’s Museum. This museum features works from three of Scotland’s most famous writers: Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, and Robert Louis Stevenson.

  • The Scotsman Picturehouse: Step into this 1920’s themed gorgeous theater and spend a rainy evening watching a movie! This was a really unique movie theater with comfortable seats and an experience like no other!

Places to eat & drink in Edinburgh

Greyfriars Bobby Pub, photo by Beni DiVasta

  • Gaia: While not Scottish food, Gaia is a small Italian restaurant that makes amazing paninis and definitely worth the stop while in Edinburgh.

  • Greyfriars Bobby’s Bar: Named after the true story of a loyal dog, the Greyfriars Bobby’s Pub pays homage to the beloved canine while also serving up standard pub fare!

  • The Milkman: Edinburgh is known for hot chocolate and one of the most iconic spots in Edinburgh’s Old Town. And if it’s cold outside, having a nice hot cup of chocolate will be sure to warm you up.

  • Edinburgh Street Food: This is a giant food stall restaurant that offers restaurants of all types of food. There’s something for everyone here, including hot chocolate!

  • Fortitude Coffee: I would be remiss if I didn’t mention another spot for hot chocolate. Fortitude Coffee had amazing hot chocolate and is right near Arthur’s Seat, so it’s the perfect stop for warming up after a nice morning hike!

Need to know

Edinburgh is a city full of history, amazing architecture, and good pub food. The city itself is small, so come prepared to walk up and down the Royal Mile, seeing all the stops along the way.
