Day 1: Arrival

Sunset in San Miguel de Allende

After settling into your hotel, start your evening at Tunki, Casa de Sierra Nevada's rooftop bar. Watch the sun set over the iconic Parroquia de San Miguel, nibble on homemade snacks (the Peruvian corn is my favorite) and sip a freshly mixed cocktail while the cityscape is washed in a pink and orange glow.

Stroll to Restaurante del Parque for a traditional Mexican dinner in a historic garden setting that seamlessly integrates contemporary art. The mole is especially tasty.

Day 2: Taste of San Miguel tour

View from Quince Rooftop

Enjoy a leisurely, light, late breakfast at your hotel or a cafe. Be forewarned that opening times listed online for local establishments typically aren't accurate — the easygoing, "flojo" lifestyle of San Miguel means no one is in a hurry, and the actual opening hours (except at hotel restaurants) will likely be later than indicated.

For an introduction to the history, culture and foods of this storied city, embark on a walking tour with Taste of San Miguel. Their outstanding guides will educate and engage you with lots of interesting information and insider tips while taking you to some of the most authentic and delicious food spots in town. Aim for a start time around noon and it becomes a multi-stop lunch experience!

Take a siesta or a swim in the heat of the afternoon before heading to Quince Rooftop for cocktails and dinner — and maybe even some entertainment. The night I was there, a tightrope walker and electric violinist enlivened the dining experience, as did the up-close view of the stunning Parroquia de San Miguel.

After dinner, head to the Jardín, known as the city's outdoor living room, to lounge with locals and listen to mariachi bands play into the night.

Day 3: Sazón cooking class

Sazón cooking class feast

Register in advance for the Casa de Sierra Nevada's cooking class at Sazón. This hands-on experience takes you on a journey through San Miguel's markets and butcher shops to purchase fresh ingredients for a delectable lunch you'll prepare under the guidance of a local chef. You'll be amazed at what a good cook you can become in just a few hours!

After cooking (and eating), take a walk among San Miguel's many boutiques and museums. This is the kind of town where wandering aimlessly can lead to wonderful surprises.

Try out a neighborhood restaurant like El Manantial for dinner. The tostadas are excellent, and the tasty mezcalita cocktails are perfect for washing them down. Perhaps stroll to the Parque el Chorro after dinner and admire the expansive view over the city.

Day 4: Horseback riding excursion

Sunset from Luna Rooftop

Today, take an excursion with Coyote Canyon Adventures to explore the surrounding region. Their horseback riding tours are epic — and not for the faint of heart! From their office in San Miguel, a guide will drive you about 30 minutes to Boca de la Cañada, where cowboys will help you saddle up for an exhilarating ride through a canyon, up to the rim and back down again. The experience concludes with a delicious outdoor lunch at a local home. Go ahead and order a beer — after an adventure like this, you've earned it!

Back in San Miguel, you might take a little siesta or a dip in the hotel pool to cool off before getting ready for a final evening out. Start with cocktails at Luna Rooftop at the Rosewood — reserve in advance — for yet another view of the Parroquia de San Miguel and a stunning sunset. Cap off your gastronomical exploration with the tasting menu and wine pairing at Áperi, savoring unique ingredients and several local wines.

Need to know

Many museums are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so those are good days to plan food tours and excursions.

Reservations are a must at most restaurants and rooftops, especially if you're visiting over a weekend.
