Advisor - Canouan, the Caribbean’s Hidden Gem for Regenerative Luxury
Curator’s statement

There’s something quietly powerful about Canouan, a place where luxury and regeneration aren’t in conflict but are beautifully intertwined. What drew me in wasn’t just the turquoise waters or the private villas, but the island’s deep commitment to restoration—from coral reef protection to community empowerment. As a travel curator who believes in leaving a place better than you found it, Canouan speaks to my values on every level. It’s the kind of destination that invites you to slow down, connect, and be part of something more meaningful.

Things to do in Canouan

Snorkeling at Tobago Cays

This is my favorite day trip from Canouan. The Tobago Cays Marine Park is famous for its crystal-clear waters, coral reefs, and sea turtles. I’ll never forget the first time I swam there, completely surrounded by vibrant fish and calm, curious turtles. It’s an experience that stays with you. I always recommend a reef-safe sunscreen and a waterproof camera if you want to capture the magic.

Sunset hike to Mount Royal

Mount Royal is Canouan’s highest point, and hiking to the top rewards you with panoramic views of the Grenadines. It’s not a long trek, but the terrain gets steep, so bring water and sturdy shoes. I like timing the hike just before sunset, when the light gets golden and the view becomes something you’ll want to sit with for a while.

Quiet time at Shell Beach

This beach is one of the most peaceful corners of the island: soft sand, gentle waves, and rarely a crowd. It’s ideal for reading, meditating, or simply unwinding. I often bring fresh fruit from the local market and spend a few hours here doing nothing, which is sometimes exactly what travel should feel like.

Sailing around the Grenadines

Seeing the Grenadines by boat is the best way to understand the beauty of this region. From Canouan, you can sail to places like Mayreau, Union Island, and the Tobago Cays. Along the way, expect turquoise lagoons, uninhabited islands, and maybe even dolphins riding the waves beside you. It’s part adventure, part meditation.

Visiting the coral restoration efforts

Canouan has become more involved in reef restoration in recent years, and it’s possible to learn about these efforts through local guides or dive instructors. While not always part of a formal tour, asking questions and supporting businesses involved in marine conservation is a great way to travel more consciously.

Plant-based options at the resort

While menus change seasonally, I’ve had great experiences requesting plant-based meals at the restaurants at the Mandarin Oriental. Chefs are happy to accommodate vegan and vegetarian diets with fresh, local ingredients, especially tropical fruits, grilled vegetables, and hearty grain-based dishes. Always ask what’s fresh that day.

Spa experience at the Mandarin Oriental

The spa here is something special. Perched above the coastline, some of the treatment rooms have views that feel almost unreal. My personal favorite is the Blissful Sea ritual, a full-body massage using warm Himalayan salt stones, followed by a deeply relaxing Ayurvedic facial. The setting, the sounds of the ocean, and the intentional treatments create a calm that stays with you long after.

Places to eat & drink in Canouan

Where to eat vegan in Canouan

While Canouan doesn’t have fully vegan-only restaurants, you’ll find plenty of places where plant-based travelers are thoughtfully catered to. Upscale resorts and local favorites offer creative, flavor-packed meals using fresh island ingredients, and chefs are often happy to customize dishes upon request.

Mandarin Oriental, Canouan

This luxury resort takes plant-based dining seriously. At Lagoon Café, I had one of my absolute favorites, the spicy vegetarian curry. It’s loaded with ginger, lemongrass, garlic, and seasonal vegetables, and it can be made fully vegan on request. Comforting, warming, and full of flavor, it’s one of those dishes that stays with you. They also serve the truly vegan patty—a hearty mix of lentils, beetroot, broccoli, and mushrooms—that’s both nourishing and satisfying. Dishes are beautifully presented in an elegant beachfront setting with chefs who genuinely understand plant-based dining and offer service that makes you feel truly looked after.

Tides Bar & Grill

Also part of the Mandarin Oriental, this European-inspired spot offers small plates and fresh seasonal dishes. Vegan options aren’t listed on the standard menu, but the team is happy to tailor something special. It’s perfect for light bites or cocktails with a view.

Canouan Estate Resort & Villas

This resort focuses on fresh, local produce and Mediterranean–Caribbean fusion. While menus change seasonally, the chefs are happy to prepare vegan dishes upon request. Think grilled vegetables, herbed couscous, and flavorful plant-based adaptations of local classics.

Tranquility (Aneka’s Place)

With its vibrant island flavors and stunning sea views, Tranquility is a lovely spot for a relaxed plant-based meal. Vegetarian options are available, and many can be made vegan—just speak to the team. Dishes like coconut callaloo, veggie stews, and rice and peas are often possible, depending on the day’s ingredients.

Conch Shell Restaurant and Bar

A local favorite with a chilled, no-fuss vibe. While the menu is seafood-led, they’re more than happy to whip up vegan versions of Caribbean staples like curried veg with roti, rice and peas, and sautéed plantains.

Soul Food Restaurant & Bar

Known for its comforting island dishes and welcoming atmosphere, Soul Food isn’t exclusively vegan, but they’re open to customizing plant-based meals. Look out for stewed red beans, mashed breadfruit, and simple veggie sides packed with flavor.

Need to know

Canouan is one of those rare places that invites you to slow all the way down and stay there. It’s not loud or flashy, and that’s what makes it special. But because it’s still a bit of a hidden gem, here are a few things I always tell friends and clients before they go:

  • Unplugging isn’t optional—it’s a gift. Wi-Fi exists, but this isn’t the place to be glued to your inbox. Some of my best moments on the island happened when I left my phone behind, like one quiet morning on Shell Beach with nothing but a sarong, fresh fruit, and a book. That kind of stillness is rare, and Canouan gives it to you.

  • Book your must-dos early. With a smaller number of boats, guides, and spa appointments available, things can book out, especially in high season. If you’re dreaming of a sailing day or a specific treatment at the Mandarin Oriental Spa (my favorite is the Blissful Sea ritual), I recommend reserving it before you arrive.

  • Support local, intentionally. The luxury experience here is incredible, but so is the heart of the local community. I always try to explore beyond the resort, whether it’s chatting with a local guide about marine conservation or picking up handmade goods in town. Those small moments often end up being the most memorable.

  • Pack smart. Bring what you need: reef-safe sunscreen, natural bug spray, and a sun hat you love, since the island’s shops are limited and focus more on essentials than variety. A good beach tote goes a long way.

  • Let the island set the pace. Things happen slowly here, but with intention. Whether you’re waiting on a boat or for a fresh coconut, trust the process. It’s all part of the rebalancing that happens when you’re somewhere that’s not trying to rush your experience. Just take your time and soak all the beauty of this island in.
