Things to do in Spain

men dressed in celebratory garb for Cadiz festival

In February 2023, I had the pleasant surprise of discovering the Carnival of Cadiz and its province. I enjoyed firsthand this wonderful cultural manifestation and today I want to share this experience with all of you.

The musical groups are the protagonists of this festivity and their distinctive names, which you may not have heard before, quickly become familiar. Here are the main musical groups that you will find:

Chirigotas: These are groups primarily composed of voices and guitars. They perform humorous and satirical songs with clever and critical lyrics. Chirigotas usually have a playful and lighthearted style, aiming to entertain and amuse the audience. They specifically use the "corneta chirigotera," which is a brass wind instrument similar to a cornet but smaller and more peculiar in shape. Its distinct high and festive sound adds a unique touch to the performances of the chirigotas.

Comparsas: These are larger musical groups consisting of singers, musicians, and instrumentalists. Comparsas perform songs with deeper and more reflective content, addressing current, social or sentimental topics. Their lyrics are often poetic and emotive, and the melodies can be more complex.

Coros: These groups have a more traditional choral structure, including voices of different ranges and sometimes accompanied by musical instruments. Coros interpret songs spanning a wide range of styles, from humorous to lyrical and they often have a more theatrical approach to their presentation.

Cuartetos: These are musical formations composed of four members, usually singers, who perform comical and satirical songs with witty and fast-paced dialogues. Cuartetos have a more intimate focus and allow for direct interaction with the audience.

Each of these musical groups structures their repertoire with specific musical compositions adding depth, variety, and artistic expression to the captivating shows presented by the groups. Here are the main ones:

Pasodobles: Pasodobles are musical compositions characterized by a marked and solemn rhythm, often interpreted with a binary structure (A-B-A). In the Carnival of Cadiz, pasodobles are commonly used by comparsas and coros to address more serious and emotive topics, such as social critiques or personal reflections.

Cuplés: Cuplés are short, comical songs with a simpler musical and lyrical structure. They are performed by chirigotas, comparsas and cuartetos, and are known for their satirical humor, clever wordplay and references to current events.

Popurrí: The popurrí is a musical composition that combines fragments of different songs into a single performance. It is used by all types of groups, including chirigotas, comparsas, coros and cuartetos. Popurrís are characterized by a blend of styles, melodies, and lyrics, often featuring rapid changes and smooth transitions.

Presentation and Estribillo: In addition to pasodobles, cuplés, and popurrís, the groups often include a presentation at the beginning of their performance, where they establish the theme and general style of the group. The estribillo, a repeated part of the song, becomes the distinctive hallmark of each group and is repeated several times throughout the performance.

During a week, I enjoyed various events surrounding the Carnival of Cadiz. It started in Conil de la Frontera, a charming fishing and tourist town. There, I immersed myself in the vibrant atmosphere, experiencing the musical groups in the streets, theaters, and local festivities. I felt a deep connection as I listened to heartfelt and authentic lyrics that reflected everyday life and our human reality. I also discovered a witty and satirical humor, spicy and contagious, that genuinely made me laugh.

On several occasions, I ventured to the city of Cadiz, where I encountered an even more magnificent and unique dimension. The entire city pulsated with a festive and welcoming ambiance. Emotions intertwined in an indescribable manner. In Cadiz, time seemed to stand still as I immersed myself in a vibrant atmosphere, discovering musical groups on every corner, turning the streets into open-air stages. Simply walking and pausing at street corners was enough to marvel at the colorful costumes filled with symbolism, merging with music and lyrics that left me speechless.
