Need to know
Travel tips & helpful info for visiting the French Riviera
1. Nice is the perfect home base: Nice is centrally located and makes an excellent base for exploring the entire Côte d’Azur. Whether you’re heading to Monaco, Cannes, Èze, Villefranche-sur-Mer, or Antibes, you can get to most places easily by train, Uber, or even bus. The Nice-Ville train station is well-connected, affordable, and efficient for day trips.
2. Rent a car for Saint-Tropez: Public transportation to Saint-Tropez is limited and time-consuming, so renting a car is highly recommended for this leg of the trip. It gives you the freedom to explore nearby towns, beach clubs and vineyards at your own pace.
3. Pack smart: Comfortable walking shoes are essential, especially in hilltop towns like Èze, where cobblestone streets and steep climbs are part of the charm.
Pack water shoes for rocky beaches since most beaches along the French Riviera—especially in Nice, Villefranche-sur-Mer, and Èze are made up of pebbles or smooth stones, not sand. While beautiful, they can be tough on bare feet, especially when getting in and out of the water. If you’re looking for sandy shores, Cannes is one of the few spots along the coast with soft, sandy beaches
Many beach clubs and upscale restaurants have a smart-casual dress code, so pack a few elevated outfits for daytime lounging and evening dinners.
4. Book in advance: Reservations are highly recommended for popular beach clubs (like Bagatelle, Hyde Beach, or Le Negresco), fine dining restaurants, and Fragonard perfume experiences, especially during summer and festival season.
5. Language & currency: French is the primary language, but English is widely understood in tourist areas. The currency is the Euro (€) but credit cards are accepted almost everywhere
6. Best time to visit: Late May through September is ideal for warm weather, beach days, and lively atmospheres. Shoulder seasons (April–May or September–October) are great for fewer crowds and mild temperatures.
