Curator’s statement
The stretch of coastline along the Adriatic Sea—from Ravenna through Rimini, straddling the southern part of Romagna and northern Marche—will always be my favorite corner of Italy. Nearly nine years ago, when I first arrived in this region, I had to pinch myself every time I wandered down a cobbled street into a medieval borgo or sat down to a plate of spaghetti alle vongole by the sea. To this day, I still don’t understand why more Americans don’t explore this incredible part of Italy. It may not have the yachts of Portofino or the cliffside drama of Amalfi, but its rich culture, vibrant food scene, and laid-back local charm make it the kind of place you never want to leave.

Things to do on the Riviera Romagnola

Gradara: A magical castle that overlooks the sea.
The beach clubs of Cattolica are my favorite part of this area. The town is simply rows of cabanas, colorful umbrellas, loungers, and playgrounds, and it quickly became my idea of the perfect summer escape. The hotels are warm and family-oriented—we even hosted our wedding in 2019 at my favorite: Hotel Carducci, a converted seafront villa with timeless elegance and laid-back vibes. The Romagnolo hospitality is genuine and unpretentious—it’s rare to hear the word “no.”
To the north, Rimini offers even more energy, with its own charming borgo, a wealth of dining options, and the classic five-star Grand Hotel Rimini for those seeking luxury. There is also incredible shopping and nightlife in this area (think world famous discos, and parties that continue through sunrise).
To the south lies Pesaro, technically part of the Marche region and even more relaxed than its Romagnolo neighbors. Pesaro is a treasure trove for beach lovers, with excellent accommodations like the chic Hotel Excelsior—boasting the area’s best full-service beach club and spa—and the stylish new Opera Suite Hotel, a four-star option perfect for longer stays and families.
Venture inland, and the hills will take your breath away—ideal for cycling, dotted with castles and vineyards. The fairytale-like Gradara Castle hosts magical summer events, while Castello di Tavoleto holds a special place in my heart—it’s where I got married. The countryside is also full of art-filled churches, local wineries, and stunning agriturismos, like Filodivino in San Marcello, a personal favorite for both its spa and summer wine events.
Then there’s the food—dare I say, the best in Italy. From humble piadina and fresh sardoncini to exceptional Michelin-starred experiences, this region’s culinary scene is unmatched. My personal favorite is the unpretentious Dalla Gioconda in Gabicce Monte, where the sunset views are only rivaled by the tasting menu. Seafood—from branzino to calamari to mussels—is always fresh and far more affordable than in other coastal Italian destinations.
Though this region is incredibly family-friendly, it also has a lively nightlife scene—ranging from beach bars serving generous aperitivos to full-on discos where the dancing doesn’t stop until sunrise.

The home of spaghetti alla vongole
Dalla Giocanda: Unpretentious Michelin-starred food, with an amazing soundtrack and the best vistas in town.
La Mi Mama: Humble, bold pasta dishes that never disappoint in the heart of Rimini.
Cicco’s: The freshest seaside fish joint on Cattolica’s lungomare, perfect for dining in your bathing suit.
La Casaccia: Country cooking (hearty meat, local cheeses), with perfect views of Gradara’s famous castle.
Taverna a Pesci in Faccia: Local grilled fish and huge pasta dishes in the heart of Cattolica.
