Advisor - Winter Escape to Whistler
Curator’s statement

Whistler is a truly beautiful place in every season. My husband and I opted for a winter escape this year and were incredibly grateful for our week here. He snowboards and I’m a beginner skier, so the endless terrain throughout Whistler Blackcomb allowed us to equally enjoy the slopes. From the snow, to the vibrant food scene, to the luxury spas, Whistler has options for every interest.

Things to do in Whistler

Explore

If you’re traveling to Whistler from Vancouver, take a detour in Squamish. Pop into Smoke Bluff Coffee and grab a drink before heading to Fergie’s for lunch. Be prepared for a long wait (hence the coffee stop beforehand) but the locally-sourced menu is worth it! The Forager Benedict and the Pulled Pork Hash are two of my favorite dishes.

Adventure

Whistler Blackcomb is the largest ski resort in North America. With two side-by-side mountains, there are over 200 marked runs ranging from Green to Double Black Diamond.

If you’re new to skiing or snowboarding, or just want to improve, Whistler Blackcomb has lessons for every level and age group. The teachers are patient and incredibly knowledgeable. For first-timers, I recommend a three-day ski lesson to solidify the teachings and get up on the slopes!

For those who après more than ski, you can still enjoy the mountain views with a sightsee ticket. These single, or multi-day passes allow you to take the gondolas up to the peak to soak up panoramic views—and maybe a beverage or two. Experience the stunning Peak to Peak Gondola that transports you between the Blackcomb and Whistler mountains. Wait for one of the two glass-bottom gondolas on this route to witness an even greater view of the forest.

Other winter activities at Whistler include snowmobiling and even dog sledding!

Relax

Before heading home, relax and recover in one of Whistler’s many incredible spas. The Spa at Four Seasons Resort Whistler was named Canada’s Best Resort Spa for the past two years and has beautiful facilities. The Spa at Nita Lake Lodge is another favorite of mine and boasts med spa treatments and reflexology.

Places to eat & drink in Whistler

  • BReD Organic Sourdough: Excellent coffee, pastries, and bread in Creekside.

  • Lorette Brasserie: One of Whistler’s newest additions. This lovely French restaurant is a perfect spot for brunch.

  • Portobello: Located within the Fairmont hotel, this restaurant serves hearty Italian sandwiches that are perfect after a morning of skiing. If you’re in need of a sweet treat, opt for one of their beautiful pastries to pair with a hot chocolate.

  • Raven Room: Known for its premier cocktails and fried chicken. The bison short rib is so tender, it doesn’t even require a knife.

  • Il Caminetto: My favorite meal of the trip! A truly beautiful restaurant with incredible staff. Our attentive server, Stephen, made our dining experience even more lovely. Order the polpettine (crispy wagyu beef meatballs), the bucatini all’amatriciana, and tiramisu to finish. Be sure to enjoy an Italian wine from their extensive list.

  • Bar Oso: Lively restaurant serving Spanish-influenced tapas and charcuterie boards.

  • Flute & Formage: Enjoy an elevated afternoon Après with Wine and/or Cheese Flights. If you’re feeling fancy, splurge on the Caviar. Apero Hour is available from 3-5 pm daily and you can even rent a Fondue set for an evening.

Need to know

To reach Whistler, the closest major airport is Vancouver. Depending upon weather conditions and traffic, the drive from the airport is about 2–2.5 hours. There are numerous shuttle options to transport you to Whistler (Epic Rides, Skylynx, Whistler Shuttle) or rent a car so that you have the freedom to make stops along the way.
