Advisor - The Greek Island Hop: A One-Week Mediterranean Escape
Curator’s statement

Greece is truly magical—from its iconic whitewashed buildings set against the deep blue Aegean Sea to the timeless history woven through Athens, where ancient ruins and modern life exist side by side. It’s a place where art, history, culture, cuisine, and breathtaking landscapes come together effortlessly. With over 6,000 islands, each offering its own unique character, landscapes, and traditions, Greece feels endlessly explorable. I was lucky enough to experience just three islands on this trip, and it only left me counting down the days until I can return and discover even more.

Day 1: Arrive in Athens & explore its iconic landmarks

Monastiraki Square in Athens, Greece with an incredible view of the Acropolis.

Begin your Greece trip with one night in Athens, staying in the heart of downtown. After arriving, spend the day exploring the city on foot—starting at Syntagma Square to watch the changing of the guards, then diving into Athens’ ancient history with a visit to the Acropolis and nearby landmarks. Wrap up the day wandering through the charming streets of Plaka and the lively Monastiraki Square.

Day 2: From Athens to Oia—cliffs, churches & sunsets

Fly from Athens to Santorini. Arrive in Oia and begin exploring the village on foot. Wander through the charming streets, visit the iconic blue-domed churches, and stop by the Windmills of Oia for photos and views. In the evening, head to the Castle of Oia to watch the famous Santorini sunset, then enjoy a relaxed dinner.

Day 3: Cliffside hikes, caldera views & local wines

Start the day with the scenic volcanic hike from Oia to Fira (Thera), one of Santorini’s most iconic walks. Plan for a 2–2.5 hour hike, with a short, steep climb from Fira to Imerovigli followed by a long, gradual downhill stretch toward Oia. After the hike, enjoy a wine tour, offering a relaxing way to sample Santorini’s local wines and unwind after an active morning.

Day 4: Slow mornings, caldera swims & sunset sails

Spend the morning at leisure in Oia before heading out for a catamaran sunset cruise. Enjoy swimming stops, views of the caldera from the water, and a memorable sunset at sea during the cruise. You will be dropped off at Ammoudi Bay, where you can enjoy fresh seafood right on the water before heading back up to Oia.

Day 5: A slow day in Naxos

A view of Naxos from the Temple of Apollo.

With just one day in Naxos, the perfect plan is to slow down and enjoy the island’s natural beauty. Start your day with a beach day at Agios Georgios Beach, known for its soft sand, clear, shallow water, and relaxed atmosphere—ideal for swimming, sunbathing, or grabbing lunch at a nearby seaside tavern. In the late afternoon, head back toward Naxos Town and take a scenic walk to the Temple of Apollo (Portara). Set on a small islet overlooking the harbor, it’s one of the most iconic spots on the island and an unforgettable place to watch the sunset, wrapping up your day in Naxos on a truly magical note

Day 6: Whitewashed lanes & island evenings in Mykonos

Little Venice Mykonos, Greece

With a full day in Mykonos, you can experience the island’s perfect mix of charm, culture, and energy. Start your day exploring Mykonos Town, continue on to Little Venice, where colorful buildings sit right at the edge of the sea, then walk to the iconic Mykonos Windmills for classic island views and sunset. Wrap up your day with dinner at Mamalouka, enjoying modern Greek cuisine in a lively setting.

Day 7: Ferry crossings, final bites & a soft landing in Athens

View of Acropolis of Athens with Parthenon and Erechtheion from Filopappou Hill.

On your last day, take a ferry from Mykonos back to Athens. Stay in Athens overnight, spending a few hours exploring, grabbing one last Greek meal, or souvenir shopping before heading out the following morning—an easy, flexible way to wrap up the trip.

Need to know

  1. Ferries are key for island hopping. High-speed ferries are worth the extra cost, as they save valuable travel time. It’s crucial to book in advance.

  2. If your flight timing allows, consider heading straight from Athens to Santorini rather than staying overnight in Athens first.

  3. When visiting the Acropolis, enter through the southern entrance to avoid the busiest crowds.

  4. Ammoudi Bay Fish Tavern is a must for dinner in Santorini—fresh seafood with an unforgettable waterfront setting.

  5. The walk from Oia to Ammoudi Bay includes approximately 300 steps, so wear comfortable shoes

  6. A catamaran sunset cruise is a fantastic way to see Santorini from the water and experience the famous sunset away from the crowds.

  7. A Santorini wine tour is a great addition to your itinerary and an easy way to explore the island’s unique volcanic wines without worrying about transportation.

  8. Important note: You cannot flush toilet paper down the toilet in Greece—dispose of it in the provided bin to avoid plumbing issues.

  9. Greeks eat dinner late—8:30–10 pm is normal. It is recommended to make dinner reservations in advance.

  10. Visit popular sights early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid cruise crowds
