Things to do in Tromsø, Norway

Feeding the reindeer before enjoying a warm meal in the Sámi tent
Explore the town: You’ll find beautifully crafted wool sweaters, Sámi-inspired jewelry, Arctic skincare, and thoughtful souvenirs that reflect life above the Arctic Circle.
Troll Museum: A playful and interactive way to learn about the history of trolls in Norway. It is fun for all ages and a great way to warm up in the winter months.
Polaria: A compact Arctic sea life center offering insight into the marine ecosystems of the far north. Visitors can learn about Arctic wildlife and meet the seals that are cared for, rehabilitated, and eventually released back into the wild. It’s an educational and meaningful stop that highlights conservation alongside hands-on discovery.
Blown Glass Factory: A wonderfully creative stop in downtown Tromsø and one of the world’s northernmost glass-blowing studios. With large open windows into the workshop, you can watch skilled artisans shape molten glass into beautiful bowls, vases, and other pieces right in front of you. You can also shop their beautiful creations.
Visit a Sámi farm for an unforgettable cultural experience in the Arctic: You’ll have the chance to feed reindeer, gather around a cozy fire, and enjoy a traditional Sámi meal such as reindeer or beef stew, with a vegetarian option also available. You'll listen to stories of Sámi history and culture and hear traditional joik songs, some tours may also include reindeer sledding—and if you’re lucky, you may even see the Aurora Borealis dancing across the night sky.
Cruise through the fjords while spotting Northern marine life: A day on the water from Tromsø can take you into the dramatic fjords in search of some of the Arctic’s most impressive wildlife.
Whale-watching excursions: Local companies offer tours that head north from the harbor toward the feeding grounds around Skjervøy, where orcas and humpback whales gather to feast on herring in the winter months.
Fjellheisen: This iconic cable car takes you from the lower station in Tromsdalen up to the Storsteinen ledge, about 421 meters above sea level, in just four to five minutes—a quick but rewarding journey with wide-ranging views. Once at the top, you’re greeted by a sweeping panoramic vista of Tromsø and its surrounding fjords, islands, and mountains. Pro tip: Go in the evening for a chance to see the Northern Lights dance over the town.
Places to eat & drink in Tromsø, Norway

The smallest bar in the universe
Raketten Bar & Pølse: Also known as the smallest bar in the universe and a great lunch stop. Located right in the center, this tiny hut offers up the best hot dogs. You have choices like reindeer, pork, and veggie. Pair that with a cold beer, mulled wine, or hot chocolate, and find a seat in the covered picnic area for a delicious cozy lunch. They also have marshmallows for roasting at one of the fire pits.
Burgr: A retro burger joint inspired by '80s and '90s video games. While it may be a bit kitschy, it's really fun, and the smash burgers are amazing.
La Famiglia: A fantastic family restaurant in the heart of Tromsø. Everything from their wood-fired pizzas to their homemade pastas makes for the perfect meal before setting out for a Northern Lights adventure.
Hard Rock Cafe Tromsø: Bear with me—this is the northernmost Hard Rock Cafe in the world. Thanks to Norway’s exceptionally high food standards, the ingredients are impressively fresh, and the food is genuinely well done. It’s a familiar name, yes, but one that surprises in Tromsø, especially paired with harbor views and an unmistakably Arctic setting.
Fiskekompaniet: This is known to be the best seafood restaurant in Tromsø. With everything from fresh oysters and king crab legs to creamy seafood soups and seasonal shellfish, you will not be disappointed.
