Advisor - A Marathoner's Guide to Visiting Chicago
Curator’s statement

Chicago is so special to me; not only is my family from here and did I go to school here, but this was also the location of my first marathon. The moment of crossing that finish line for the first time is something that can never be taken way from you. Chicago is an excellent marathon city for many reasons—in addition to the flat course, the great weather (usually), and the amazing crowds (shoutout to Boystown!), Chicago has beautiful skyline views, an exceptional food scene, and great, unique activities. It is an amazing marathon destination.

Things to do in Chicago

  • Chicago architecture river cruise: This is, hands-down, one of the most-cited experiences that people say they loved when visiting Chicago. Even if you aren't an architecture nerd, spending time on a boat cruising down the river and listening to the history of the city is a great way to really experience Chicago. It is something I could do again and again.

  • The Art Institute of Chicago: For any art lovers (or even the casually interested non-art-lover), the Art Institute is a must. They have a huge and varied collection that has something for everyone. The building is beautiful and located right within Millennium Park. You're sure to spend some time walking through the park, and it's definitely worth the extra time to come in and see the art.

  • Shedd Aquarium: The Shedd is one of Chicago's most beloved attractions. It is one of the world's largest indoor aquariums and houses aquatic species from all over the world. The beluga whales, dolphins, sea otters, and sea lions are must-see attractions—although as a Great Lakes native, I also have to recommend the lake sturgeon!

  • Take a run on the Lakefront Trail: There is no place better for a shakeout run or a casual walk in the sun. Chicago boasts miles and miles of lakefront trails with incredible skyline views. My favorite stretch is to start along the riverwalk, on the south side of the river, and run east to the lake and then south along the lake to the Adler Planetarium. The run there is lovely, but the way back will give you the best skyline views.

  • Visit a jazz club: Chicago has a really fun jazz scene with several jazz clubs downtown. Reserve a table at Andy's for dinner and a show in an iconic venue, or Blue Chicago for an unpretentious, intimate club with great energy

Places to eat & drink in Chicago

Chicago is an amazing foodie city and has lots of excellent fine dining options. Here are some of the places and foods that I always make time for when I'm in town. They may not be the most elegant options, but they are classic Chicago and you can't find them anywhere else. And since they aren't all things you'll want to eat right before a marathon, that's just one more reason to arrive early or stay for an extra day or two after the race!

  • Deep dish pizza: This is such an iconic Chicago thing to eat—you have to try it. The two most popular places are Lou Malnati's and Giordano's. These are not the only two options in the city, but they are the most discussed and debated options. It may be a little touristy, but in the best possible way. I definitely recommend you try them both and decide for yourself!

  • Portillo's: Another Chicago classic! Go for a classic Chicago-style hot dog. They also have vegan options, which are definitely worth trying.

  • Garrett Popcorn: There are both sweet and savory options and they are all addicting. You can pick up some in ORD on the way out, too, if you miss them in the city! The Garrett mix combines cheese and caramel flavors, and I know that sounds gross, but it's the best one.

  • The Berghoff: This is a historic German restaurant and brewery that is fun to just hang out in and have a good meal and a few rounds in a casual and very authentic-feeling place. Heads up: the menu is not very vegan- or vegetarian-friendly, but it's still fun to come by for vibes or a beer!

Need to know

The easiest place to stay, by far, is near the northwest corner of Millennium Park. You'll have easy access to the race on race day as well as quick access to the public transit line that takes you to the expo. Many tourist attractions are within walking distance from there as well. It will feel crowded and busy in that area, for sure, but a lot of the crowds will be runners, which brings a really electric feel to the city.
