Curator’s statement

Often overlooked by those who associate it solely with beaches and eco-tourism, Costa Rica is anything but ordinary. This radiant country has evolved into far more than a tropical stopover—it’s a “small big country” teeming with breathtaking natural beauty, cultural richness, and bold ecological innovation. Though modest in size, Costa Rica stands tall on the global stage as a leader in sustainability, conservation, and conscious living. So, what should you do once you arrive? These are just a few of my favorite ways to experience the magic of Costa Rica.

Finding adventure, peace, and excitement in La Fortuna, Costa Rica.

Visit the La Fortuna Waterfall

A visit to La Fortuna Waterfall is a must for any traveler seeking awe-inspiring natural beauty. Towering at nearly 200 feet, this stunning cascade plunges into a vibrant turquoise pool, cradled by dense, emerald-green rainforest. Soak in La Fortuna’s natural hot springs

If you’re ready to unwind, I certainly was...there’s no better place than La Fortuna’s mineral-rich, geothermal hot springs—a signature experience of the region. Naturally heated by the nearby Arenal Volcano, these therapeutic waters are known for their soothing, restorative properties. Whether you're looking for peaceful seclusion or a more social, resort-style soak, you'll find it here. Premier spots like Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa and Baldi Hot Springs offer everything from serene jungle pools to luxurious spa treatments, creating the perfect sanctuary to relax your tired muscles and recharge both body and mind after a day of exploration.

Hike the trails around Arenal Volcano

There’s nothing like a scenic hike to elevate your vacation—and Arenal Volcano National Park delivers the perfect blend of adventure, beauty, and tranquility. Wander along well-marked trails that wind through dense tropical rainforests, across ancient lava fields, and up to panoramic viewpoints overlooking both the majestic Arenal Volcano and shimmering Lake Arenal. Along the way, you may spot wildlife like toucans, coatis, or even howler monkeys. Whether you’re an avid hiker or just looking for a peaceful nature walk, these trails offer a breathtaking journey through one of Costa Rica’s most iconic landscapes—a paradise for both explorers and photographers alike.

White-water rafting on the Balsa River

Nature lovers, if you’re craving a burst of adrenaline wrapped in natural beauty, white water rafting on the Balsa River is a must. With Class II–III rapids, this river offers the perfect balance of excitement and accessibility—ideal for both first-timers and seasoned adventurers. Paddle through exhilarating twists and turns as you’re surrounded by lush jungle, cascading greenery, and the sounds of tropical wildlife. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for monkeys, toucans, and other exotic species that make their home along the riverbanks. It’s a high-energy adventure with just the right touch of wild serenity.

Take a wildlife tour on the Bogarin Trail

Step off the beaten path and into the heart of La Fortuna’s hidden natural wonder—the Bogarin Trail. Just a short walk from town, this locally managed trail is one of the best-kept secrets for spotting wild sloths, along with vibrant frogs, colorful birds, and other fascinating rainforest creatures. As a lover of nature, this was fascinating! What makes it truly special is its accessibility and intimacy with nature—no long drives or crowded parks, just pure, quiet immersion. Opting for a guided tour significantly enhances the experience, as local guides have a keen eye for spotting wildlife and sharing insights about the ecosystem. It’s the perfect adventure for nature lovers seeking an authentic connection with Costa Rica’s rich biodiversity.

Enjoy a farm-to-table tour

I wasn’t sure what to expect at first, but taking a farm-to-table tour in La Fortuna turned out to be one of the most enriching and memorable experiences of the trip. Visiting local farms and learning firsthand about the cultivation and preparation of Costa Rica’s most treasured crops—cacao, coffee, and tropical fruits—was both educational and inspiring. These immersive tours go beyond sightseeing—they’re fully interactive, offering tastings, hands-on activities, and a meaningful look into the region’s deep-rooted traditions, sustainability practices, and the powerful connection between the land and its people. It’s a flavorful journey that nourishes both curiosity and palate.

Drift into golden hour with a scenic sunset cruise across Lake Arenal, where calm waters mirror the sky and the towering silhouette of Arenal Volcano creates a breathtaking backdrop. As the sun slowly dips below the horizon, enjoy cool mountain breezes, light local bites, and the peaceful sounds of nature all around you. Keep your eyes peeled for howler monkeys, exotic birds, and other wildlife that may appear along the shoreline.
