Things to do in Los Angeles, CA

Pier-to-pier bike ride from Manhattan Beach to Hermosa Beach: The South Bay holds a special place in my heart. It’s where I chose to live for 10+ years and to this day, I can honestly say, there is nowhere else in the world like it! One of the best ways to experience this part of LA like a local is biking along the scenic Strand from Manhattan Beach to Hermosa Beach. This paved oceanfront path is perfect for families, with gorgeous views, lively beach energy, and plenty of spots to stop for a treat, a swim, or even a spontaneous volleyball game (you may even catch a few Olympians out there!). It’s simple, active, and captures the laid-back California lifestyle in the best way. And, if you’re really feeling adventurous, take your bike along the path a little further north and you can explore the very cool and artsy Venice Beach
Surf lesson: Nothing says Southern California quite like surfing! I highly recommend spending an early morning on the beach and getting a family surf lesson! We really loved our experience at Redondo Surf Club and also at Wave Huggers (locations all along the coast, including Malibu). Insider tip: Grab breakfast burritos to go and enjoy them while sitting on your board on the sand, soaking in the morning vibes.
Muscle Beach and Santa Monica Pier: Take in the energy of Santa Monica with a stop at the original “Muscle Beach,” where kids and adults alike can watch (or try!) fun challenges like rings and rope climbs right on the sand. It’s the perfect mix of entertainment and activity, with something always happening. My kids absolutely loved playing here and we were all blown away by the people watching. You won’t believe your eyes—from tightrope walks, to rope climb races to acrobats. From here, you’ll be able to stroll over to the Santa Monica Pier for classic rides, games, and a bit of nostalgic seaside fun.
Hike Runyon Canyon: LA natives love to be outside as much as possible. Runyon Canyon is a great place to go for a hike. Locals often use it as their daily workout spot. It’s a relatively easy hike with a great view of the skyline and the Hollywood sign. Enter from Fuller Ave for easy trail access. You’ll get a great workout, great pictures, and maybe even a great celebrity sighting or two!
Rodeo Drive, dahhhling: Spend the afternoon experiencing the iconic glamour of Beverly Hills. Start with brunch at the legendary Polo Lounge (keep your eyes peeled for celebs!), then wander Rodeo Drive for a little window shopping. For a sweet treat, my kids got a big kick out of the Sprinkles Cupcakes ATM Machine.
Hollywood Walk of Fame: If you’re spending some time in LA, you MUST experience a little Hollywood magic. My kids loved exploring the Hollywood Walk of Fame at their own pace and snapping photos with their favorite celebrity’s stars. Be sure to check out the handprints in front of the Chinese Theatre too and give a wave in front of The Dolby Theater—the home of the Oscars. I recommend exploring this area on a weekday morning to avoid big crowds.
Universal Studios and Studio Tour: This is a must-do...especially if your kids are Harry Potter or Super Mario Bros fans. Ride the rides, try the Butterbeer, and don’t miss the studios tour. It’s one of the most unique, all-ages experiences in LA—you’re not just riding rides, you’re stepping into real movie-making. Trust me when I say the express pass is worth every penny.
Hollywood Bowl concert: The Hollywood Bowl is such a special venue for concerts. Be sure to check the schedule before your trip and see if you can snag some tickets. It’s an open-air amphitheater that opened in 1922. Be sure to pack a picnic ahead of time and eat it on the lawn prior to the show. Or, if you can get box seats, you can have your picnic right at your seats.
The Grove and Farmers Market (easy, family-friendly, great food): The Grove and the Original Farmers Market is a perfect blend of shopping, dining, and classic LA charm. They have trolley rides, great shops, and endless food options. I remember when I first went to the Grove, I thought to myself...now THIS is LA!
Go to a Dodger game: The 2-time World Series Champions are SO fun to watch. On our last visit, we took a stadium tour where we got to watch batting practice, take pictures on the field, and see all the amazing Dodger memorabilia. Pro tip: Buy same-day game tickets for the best rate and be sure to eat a Dodger Dog.
Take some day trips: You’re close to so many amazing things in Los Angeles. Drive the coast less than 2 hours to Santa Barbara for incredible wine tasting. Be sure to stop in the storybook town of Solvang—your kids will love the cute little Danish-style streets, bakeries, and windmills. Head south two hours to visit the San Diego Zoo. And, of course, we can’t forget Disneyland, which is only 40 minutes from LAX. Los Angeles is an incredible hub for so many beautiful and fun places to experience as a family.
Places to eat & drink in Los Angeles, CA

Bluestone Lane (Manhattan Beach): I dream about their avocado toast, fresh juice, and breakfast burrito. I go every single morning I’m in town.
Rock n Fish (Manhattan Beach): Always a favorite, right on Manhattan Beach Ave. We are all obsessed with their Kona Pie for dessert. Adults: Be sure to order a “Navy Grog” at the bar!
Father’s Office (Santa Monica): Famous for the best burger in LA; casual and fun for kids.
Blue Plate Taco (Santa Monica): Quick, beachside Mexican for lunch or snacks.
The Griddle Cafe (LA): Giant, unforgettable pancakes for breakfast. And when I say giant, I mean GIANT!
Pizzeria Mozza (Hollywood): Some of the best pizza in Hollywood. Obviously—it’s a Nancy Silverton creation!
In and Out Burger (various locations): My kids are from Boston where they don’t have any In and Out Burgers. They not only devour the food here, but they buy all the merch and order as many things off their “secret” menu as possible.
La Scala (Beverly Hills): I have spent many work lunches at this special restaurant, and I still DREAM about their famous chopped salad with a side of fries.
Nobu Malibu: The sushi is absolutely amazing and the vibe and ocean views are even better.
Need to know
One downside to all this Los Angeles magic...the traffic! LA is huge, and traffic is unpredictable. Give yourself extra time between neighborhoods and attractions.
