Advisor - Magical Long Weekend in London: A Luxury Harry Potter-Inspired Escape
Curator’s statement

My wife and I planned this as a long weekend in late May, and it ended up being the perfect time to visit—warm, comfortable weather, minimal rain, and noticeably fewer crowds than peak summer. We originally envisioned the trip around Harry Potter—and certainly stuck to that theme—but approached it in a way that felt elevated and balanced. Between the VIP studio tour, seeing Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in London’s West End, and exploring filming locations around the city, it felt immersive without being overwhelming. Add in great food, historic pubs, and a hotel that feels like part of the experience, and it’s one of those trips that really sticks with you.

Things to do in London

Pure magic at Hogwarts!

Warner Bros. Studio tour: The making of Harry Potter (private VIP experience)

This was easily the highlight of our trip. We arranged private transfers through Blacklane, which made the day completely seamless.

We opted for the private VIP tour, and it was absolutely worth the splurge. Not only do you get incredible behind-the-scenes insight, but it also allows for better access and great photo opportunities in places like the Great Hall. It also included breakfast and Butterbeer.

One note: portions of the experience do merge with the general admission areas, so while there are exclusive elements, you will still share some spaces with other visitors.

The biggest takeaway: plan a full day here. We originally scheduled an early return but extended our time—and still didn’t feel like we saw everything.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (West End)

Seeing this in London is a must. The production is incredible, and for fans, it adds meaningful depth to the story as the characters step into adulthood.

Tip: Do both parts of the play. There’s plenty of time in between to step out for a relaxed meal, which makes the experience feel like a full event rather than just a show.

Exploring filming locations

There are two great ways to approach this.

Book a Private Black Cab Harry Potter Tour for a guided, seamless experience or do it yourself using the Tube and black cabs, which is what we chose. London’s public transportation is incredibly easy to navigate, and this approach gave us the flexibility to explore at our own pace.

Other highlights to include

  • Platform 9¾ at King’s Cross: Tourist-heavy, but worth it (go early)

  • Leadenhall Market: Beautiful, historic, and instantly recognizable

  • Westminster and South Bank walk: A perfect way to take in classic London

Places to eat & drink in London

British pie

Horse & Guardsman

We had Sunday Roast here, and it absolutely hit the spot. Located just around the corner from the hotel, it’s ideal for a quick, satisfying meal. Pair it with a local pint (the Rivertown Pilsner is a great option) after a long day of walking.

The Three Greyhounds

A great quick lunch stop. The chicken sandwich was excellent, and I went with a classic Steak and Ale pie—hearty, but exactly what you want to refuel.

Greene King Pubs

These ended up being very convenient throughout the trip. Multiple locations, consistent food, and easy when you don’t want to overthink a meal.

Sherlock Holmes Pub

A fun and fitting stop given the theme of the trip. We started with a Scotch egg, followed by hearty mains (Beef and Raclette pie and Sweet Pea Risotto), and finished with dessert and a pint. A great way to settle into the local rhythm.

Other spots to consider

  • The Lamb & Flag (Covent Garden): Cozy and historic

  • The Churchill Arms (Kensington): Lively and iconic

  • The Ivy: Polished and great pre-theater

  • The Cauldron: A playful, Harry Potter-inspired cocktail experience

Need to know

  • We used points to upgrade our flight to British Airways First Class, which made the trip feel special from the start—especially time spent in the Concorde Lounge at JFK. It’s an incredibly elevated experience, with excellent food and even Krug champagne.

  • Using Blacklane for transfers, especially for the studio tour, made everything feel seamless and stress-free.

The biggest takeaway: don’t rush this itinerary. The magic really is in giving yourself time to enjoy each experience.

If you’re planning something similar, I’m always happy to help tailor the details and make it seamless.
