Waiʻānapanapa State Park black beach
Road to Hana
The Road to Hana is one of the most iconic experiences in Hawaiʻi and one of my favorite days on Maui. The drive winds through lush rainforest, past waterfalls, dramatic coastal views, and charming local communities. I recommend taking your time and enjoying the journey, as some of the island's most beautiful scenery is found between the stops themselves.
Waiʻānapanapa State Park
Home to Maui's famous black sand beach, Waiʻānapanapa State Park was one of the most memorable stops along the Road to Hana. The contrast between the black volcanic sand, turquoise ocean, and lush green cliffs creates a truly stunning landscape. Reservations are required in advance, making it worth planning ahead.
Pipiwai Trail & Waimoku Falls
The Pipiwai Trail is one of the most rewarding hikes I experienced on Maui. The trail takes you through a magnificent bamboo forest before ending at the towering 400-foot Waimoku Falls. It's an excellent way to experience Maui's lush interior and one of my favorite adventures on the island.
Molokini Crater snorkeling
Snorkeling at Molokini Crater was one of the highlights of my trip. This partially submerged volcanic crater is known for its crystal-clear water, vibrant marine life, and excellent visibility. It's one of the best snorkeling experiences in Hawaiʻi and a must for anyone who enjoys being on the water.
Honolua Bay
Honolua Bay offers some of the best snorkeling on Maui. After a short walk through a lush coastal forest, you'll find calm waters filled with colorful tropical fish and coral reefs. I especially loved how natural and untouched the area feels compared to some of the island's more developed beaches.
Black Rock at Kāʻanapali Beach
Black Rock is one of Maui's most famous snorkeling spots and a great place to spend an afternoon. The waters are often clear, sea turtles are frequently spotted nearby, and the surrounding beach is one of the most beautiful stretches of sand on the island.
Whale watching (seasonal)
If you're visiting Maui between December and April, whale watching should be at the top of your list. Maui is one of the best places in the world to see humpback whales, and watching them breach against the backdrop of the neighboring islands is an unforgettable experience.
Kāʻanapali Beach
Kāʻanapali Beach is one of my favorite beaches on Maui for its soft sand, clear water, and beautiful sunsets. Whether you're swimming, snorkeling, walking the shoreline, or simply relaxing with a drink in hand, it's the perfect place to embrace Maui's laid-back lifestyle.
Wailea Beach
Wailea Beach perfectly captures Maui's luxurious side. Surrounded by some of the island's most beautiful resorts, this gorgeous beach offers calm water, golden sand, and spectacular sunset views. I loved spending time here relaxing and soaking in the beautiful tropical scenery.

Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa
Humuhumunukuāpuaʻa
Humuhumunukuāpuaʻa was one of the most memorable dining experiences I had on Maui. Set over a picturesque lagoon at the Grand Wailea, the restaurant offers gorgeous sunset views and an undeniably romantic atmosphere. It's the kind of place I recommend for a honeymoon celebration or special-occasion dinner.
Leilani's on the Beach
Leilani's combines beautiful ocean views with a relaxed island atmosphere. Located directly on Kāʻanapali Beach, it's one of my favorite spots to enjoy fresh seafood while watching the sunset over the Pacific. I recommend requesting a table outside, if available.
Paia Fish Market
Paia Fish Market is a Maui institution and one of my favorite casual dining spots on the island. The portions are generous, the seafood is incredibly fresh, and it's the perfect stop before or after exploring the Road to Hana.
Mama's Fish House
Mama's Fish House is one of the most iconic restaurants in Hawaiʻi and a bucket-list dining experience for many Maui visitors. Located on a beautiful stretch of coastline near Paia, the restaurant is known for its exceptionally fresh seafood, tropical setting, and impeccable service. Reservations often book months in advance, so I always recommend planning ahead.
Merriman's Kapalua
Merriman's offers one of the most spectacular oceanfront dining experiences on Maui. I love recommending it for sunset dinner because the views are every bit as impressive as the food. The menu highlights fresh local ingredients and Hawaiʻi regional cuisine, creating an elevated dining experience that feels quintessentially Maui.
Monkeypod Kitchen
Monkeypod Kitchen is one of my favorite recommendations for a relaxed dinner in Wailea. The restaurant is known for its fresh island ingredients, handcrafted cocktails, and lively atmosphere. It's the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring while still enjoying excellent food and beautiful surroundings.
Leoda's Kitchen & Pie Shop
Leoda's is one of Maui's most beloved local stops and a must-visit when driving between West Maui and South Maui. Whether you're stopping for lunch or simply grabbing a slice of their famous pie, it's a classic Maui experience that never disappoints.
Hana Farms food trucks
One of my favorite parts of staying overnight in Hana was experiencing the local food truck scene. Hana Farms and the nearby food trucks offer a laid-back atmosphere and delicious local flavors that feel completely different from the resort dining found elsewhere on the island.
South Maui Gardens food truck park
For travelers looking for variety, South Maui Gardens is one of my favorite food truck parks on Maui. The beautiful garden setting allows you to sample everything from local Hawaiian dishes to international cuisine while enjoying a relaxed outdoor atmosphere. It's a fun and casual dining experience that's perfect after a day at the beach.
Need to know
Maui is an island that rewards travelers who strike a balance between adventure and relaxation. While it's tempting to fill every day with activities, I recommend leaving plenty of time to enjoy the island's beautiful beaches, resort amenities, and spectacular sunsets. Some of my favorite Maui memories came from slowing down and simply appreciating the scenery.
If the Road to Hana is on your itinerary, I highly recommend spending at least one night in Hana rather than attempting the drive as a day trip. Staying overnight allows you to experience the area after the crowds leave and gives you more time to explore highlights like Waiʻānapanapa State Park and the Pipiwai Trail at a relaxed pace.
For travelers visiting between December and April, whale watching is a must. Maui is one of the best places in the world to see humpback whales, and it's not uncommon to spot them from beaches, restaurants, and resort pools throughout the island.
A rental car is essential for making the most of Maui. The island's diverse regions each offer something different, from the luxury resorts and golden beaches of Wailea to the scenic coastline of West Maui and the lush landscapes along the Road to Hana. Having a car allows you to experience the incredible variety that makes Maui so special.
Reservations are highly recommended for popular restaurants, especially Mama's Fish House, Merriman's, and Humuhumunukuāpuaʻa. Many of Maui's most sought-after dining experiences can book weeks or even months in advance, particularly during peak travel seasons.
Most importantly, don't try to see everything in one trip. Maui has a way of drawing travelers back again and again. Whether you're snorkeling at Molokini Crater, watching the sunset from Kāʻanapali Beach, exploring waterfalls along the Road to Hana, or enjoying a romantic dinner overlooking the ocean, Maui offers countless unforgettable experiences that make it one of Hawaiʻi's most beloved islands.
