Curator’s statement
San Miguel de Allende is truly magical, and it’s no wonder Travel + Leisure has named it the best city in the world multiple times. When people think of Mexico, they often picture beaches—but San Miguel is something entirely different. Tucked into the country’s central highlands, it’s a hidden gem brimming with art, design, and culture, all set against the charm of colonial-era architecture. The town is surrounded by stunning ranches and mountain ranges, and the food scene is varied and delicious, from street tacos to more refined dining. There’s something here for everyone, which is exactly why I chose it as the destination for my wedding. We brought about 110 guests, and nearly all of them told me it was the coolest city they’d visited in years. Like any place, San Miguel is best with a little insider knowledge, so here we go!

Things to do in San Miguel de Allende

Spend the day exploring and shopping. Walking through the main square and looking up at the Parroquia will never get old for me. There are great shops, from high-end boutiques to local markets with all artisanal goods. Mixta and the Ignacio Ramirez market are my two favorites on either end of that spectrum.
The outdoor galleries at Fabrica La Aurora are not to be missed. There is beautiful art, and it's really fun to get lost in this maze of storefronts.
Spend the day horseback riding or hiking at a family-owned ranch. The surrounding area is beautiful and there's a lot of adventure to be had. My favorite ranch has been in the owner's family for centuries, and you can feel the pride in everything they do. The homemade lunch after the activity is quite special.
Wine tasting: San Miguel has quite a few vineyards, some right at the edge of town and others about a 20- to 45-minute drive away.
Do a cooking class and learn how to make traditional mole, salsas, and more.
Places to eat & drink in San Miguel de Allende

Salvajes Brasserie: Contemporary French cuisine.
Andadanza at the Belmond: Order the short ribs if they're on the menu and thank me later.
Toastevere: A small little spot serving delicious tostadas and similar small plates.
Atrio: You come here more for the vibes and views, but the Mexican/Asian fusion food is also solid.
Bennu: Delicious sourdough pizzas and the cutest vibe. Because eventually you may want to switch it up from tacos.
San Mezcal: Delicious bites and great drinks.
La Parada: Endless types of ceviche at this casual little Peruvian spot.
Taco trucks: The trucks that come out around the main square at night are amazing.
Altar rooftop: Great drinks.
Luna rooftop: Bites and drinks with amazing views at the Rosewood.
