Advisor - Ambergris Caye: Island Life on the Belize Barrier Reef
Curator’s statement

Ambergris Caye is the kind of destination that immediately invites you to slow down and settle into island life. Sitting along the Belize Barrier Reef, it offers a beautiful balance of adventure and relaxation—whether that means exploring the reef, spending time on the water, or simply enjoying the rhythm of the island. What makes this place special to me is how genuine it feels; golf carts roll through the streets, local restaurants and beach bars are everywhere, and the sense of community is unmistakable. There’s something about the color of the water, the warm Caribbean breeze, and the easy pace of the island that makes it hard not to relax. It’s the kind of destination where every day feels simple, unhurried, and full of small memorable moments. Ambergris Caye is a place I recommend not just for its beauty, but for the feeling you take home with you.

Things to do in Ambergris Caye, Belize

Guided fly fishing trip, an amazing experience

Snorkeling the Belize Barrier Reef

Ambergris Caye sits just minutes from the Belize Barrier Reef, the second-largest barrier reef in the world. Snorkeling trips take visitors to vibrant coral gardens where colorful fish, sea turtles, rays, and nurse sharks are commonly seen. Popular spots like Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley offer calm, clear water that is ideal for both beginners and experienced snorkelers. It’s one of the easiest and most memorable ways to experience Belize’s incredible marine life.

Guided fishing trips

Fishing around Ambergris Caye is exceptional, with opportunities for both reef fishing and deep-sea excursions. Local guides know these waters well and can tailor trips for anglers looking to catch snapper, grouper, barracuda, or even larger offshore species. Fly fishing for bonefish, tarpon, and permit is also popular in the surrounding flats. A guided trip is not only productive but also a great way to spend a day out on the water. Be sure on your guided trip that you bring rain gear. These guys fish rain or shine!

Secret Beach

Despite the name, Secret Beach is one of the most popular day trips on the island. Located on the western side of Ambergris Caye, it offers calm, shallow water and beautiful sunset views over the lagoon. Beach bars and restaurants line the shore, serving fresh seafood, tropical drinks, and laid-back island music. It’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon relaxing, swimming, and enjoying the slower pace of island life.

Exploring San Pedro Town

San Pedro is the lively heart of Ambergris Caye and a great place to experience the island’s culture. The town is filled with colorful buildings, beachside restaurants, small shops, and friendly locals. Visitors can spend time browsing artisan markets, enjoying fresh seafood, or stopping at a casual beach bar for a drink. In the evenings, the town comes alive with music, dining, and a welcoming Caribbean atmosphere.

Sunset sailing

A sunset sail is one of the most relaxing ways to experience the beauty of Ambergris Caye. Small catamarans and sailing boats head out along the coast as the sun begins to dip toward the horizon. Many cruises include drinks, light snacks, and time to enjoy the warm Caribbean breeze. Watching the sky turn shades of gold and pink over the water is a simple but unforgettable island experience.

Visiting Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Hol Chan Marine Reserve is one of the most famous marine parks in Belize and sits just a short boat ride from Ambergris Caye. The protected area is known for its healthy coral formations and abundant marine life. Snorkelers and divers often see sea turtles, rays, large schools of fish, and the famous nurse sharks of nearby Shark Ray Alley. It’s widely considered one of the top underwater experiences in the country.

Island hopping to Caye Caulker

We absolutely loved Caye Caulker, and would recommend staying there for at least a couple of nights! A short boat ride from Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker offers a quieter and even more laid-back island atmosphere. Visitors often spend the day exploring the small island, enjoying waterfront restaurants, and swimming near the famous Split. The motto of the island, “Go Slow,” perfectly captures the relaxed vibe. It’s an easy and worthwhile excursion that provides a different perspective on Belize’s island culture.

It’s a wonderful place to enjoy a relaxed evening meal while watching the sun set over the water.

Need to know

Getting there:

Most travelers arrive in Belize through Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport and then continue on to Ambergris Caye by a short regional flight or water taxi. The fastest option is a scenic 15-minute flight on Tropic Air or Maya Island Air, which offers incredible views of the reef and the Caribbean. A more budget-friendly option is the water taxi from San Pedro Belize Express Water Taxi Terminal, which takes about 90 minutes and departs several times daily. Either way, the journey to the island is part of the experience and a beautiful introduction to Belize.

Getting around the island:

One of the first things visitors notice in San Pedro is that golf carts are the primary way to get around. Most hotels and rental companies offer daily or weekly golf cart rentals, which makes exploring the island easy and fun. Roads can be sandy or uneven in some areas, especially outside the main town, so driving slowly is recommended. Many of the best beach bars, restaurants, and resorts are just a short cart ride away.

Currency and payments:

The official currency in Belize is the Belize Dollar, but US dollars are widely accepted throughout Ambergris Caye. The exchange rate is typically fixed at two Belize dollars to one US dollar, which makes it easy for travelers to calculate prices. Credit cards are accepted at many hotels and larger restaurants, but smaller beach bars, food stands, and tour operators often prefer cash. It’s a good idea to carry small bills for tips, taxis, and casual dining.

Snorkeling and marine life:

Ambergris Caye sits right along the Belize Barrier Reef, the second-largest barrier reef in the world. Snorkeling and diving are among the most popular activities, with tours frequently visiting spots like Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley. Even beginners can enjoy these trips because the water is clear and marine life is abundant. Booking a tour early in your trip is a great way to make sure you don’t miss one of the island’s top experiences.

Island pace of life:

Life on Ambergris Caye moves at a relaxed Caribbean pace, which is part of its charm. Service at restaurants can be slower than what travelers may be used to, but it simply reflects the island’s laid-back atmosphere. Taking time to enjoy the scenery, conversation, and ocean views makes meals and outings more memorable. Visitors quickly learn to settle into the rhythm of the island and enjoy the slower pace.

Sun and climate:

The tropical sun in Belize is strong year-round, even when it feels breezy near the water. Wearing reef-safe sunscreen, staying hydrated, and bringing a hat are all smart choices when spending long days outdoors. Light, breathable clothing works best for the warm and humid climate. Afternoon rain showers can happen, especially in summer months, but they usually pass quickly and often cool the air.
