Things to do in Tofino, Canada

Your family will be entertained for hours exploring the beaches and their tide pools.

Surfing and beaches

Tofino is synonymous with big, beautiful beaches. Cox Bay and Chesterman Beach are the most family-friendly, with wide flat sands ideal for sandcastles, beach combing, and watching surfers. Surf lessons are a highlight for kids 6+. Tofino is Canada's surf capital, and several schools (like Surf Sister) offer beginner family sessions. Even if no one surfs, watching the pros from the shore is endlessly entertaining.

Hot Springs Cove

The crown jewel day trip—a boat ride through Clayoquot Sound (spotting whales, sea otters, and eagles along the way) leads to a natural hot springs waterfall cascading into tide pools by the ocean. Both Jamie's Whaling Station and Ahous Adventures (Indigenous-led, with guides who share Ahousaht culture and even sing traditional songs) run excellent boat tours there. Book well in advance.

Storm watching

Tofino transforms into something truly elemental in the fall and winter months, making it one of the most spectacular storm watching destinations in North America. From October through February, powerful Pacific storms roll in off the open ocean, sending walls of white water crashing against the shore and filling the air with the roar of the sea. Chesterman Beach and Cox Bay offer wide-open sightlines perfect for witnessing the fury up close, while the Wickaninnish Inn—widely credited with pioneering storm watching tourism in the region—sets the gold standard for watching the spectacle in cozy, firelit comfort. Always stay well back from the wave line, dress in full waterproof layers, and embrace the wind; storm watching with kids tends to produce wide eyes, shrieking laughter, and memories that last a lifetime.

Whale and bear watching

Tours run from the harbour throughout the season. Grey whales, black bears with cubs, sea lions, harbour seals, and bald eagles are all commonly spotted. Jamie's and Ahous both run these, as does the Marine Adventure Centre at the Tofino Resort & Marina. The Marine Adventure Centre also offers guided kayak tours—a magical way to paddle through the sound with a knowledgeable local guide.

Hiking

Tonquin Trail is Tofino’s most beloved local walk—a forested path winding through old-growth trees and mossy terrain before opening onto dramatic rocky headlands above the ocean. It's accessible from downtown and takes about 1–1.5 hours at an easy pace. Great for all ages. Or take a short water taxi from the Tofino docks to the Meares Island Big Trees Trail, an easy, flat boardwalk trail through ancient old-growth forest with trees up to 1,500 years old.

Places to eat & drink in Tofino, Canada

Known for their handcrafted artisan chocolates, gelato, and signature sea salt caramels made with local ingredients, Chocolate Tofino is the perfect post-beach treat stop.

  • Tacofino: The legendary original food truck that launched a BC empire offering fish tacos, burritos, tater tots. Afterwards, head next door to Chocolate Tofino, a beloved local institution and an absolute must for families with a sweet tooth.

  • The Shed: The casual, family-friendly hub in downtown Tofino. Great burgers, tacos, big patio, and a lively atmosphere.

  • Browns Socialhouse at Tin Wis: Beachfront location on the Pacific Rim Hwy with ocean views, heated patio, and a genuinely kid-friendly menu (salmon bowls, chicken strips, pizza). One of the best views of any restaurant in the area.

  • Wolf in the Fog: One of Tofino’s most celebrated restaurants and a perennial fixture on Canada’s best restaurant lists. Chef Nick Nutting’s menu leans deeply into the West Coast, with beautifully crafted dishes built around local seafood, foraged ingredients, and Vancouver Island produce.

  • Ombré: For a special dinner without the kids, or with older children who’ll appreciate it. Spanish/Catalonian small plates from the team behind the famous Wolf in the Fog.

  • Common Loaf Bake Shop: A Tofino institution for breakfast and baked goods, beloved by locals and families alike. Great for fueling up before a big beach day.

Need to know

Tofino is a 4.5-hour drive from Victoria or about 5 hours from Vancouver via ferry and highway—plan accordingly and break it up. The weather is notoriously changeable (it’s a rainforest!), so pack layers and rain gear regardless of the forecast. Summer weekends fill up fast—book accommodations and tours months in advance. And yes, the fish tacos are worth the line.
