Curator’s statement
Lake Como swept me off my feet the moment we arrived. The views are a watercolor painting brought to life. It’s a place that blends old-world charm with breathtaking natural beauty. You can sip espresso by the lake in the morning and hike through the Alps in the afternoon. Whether you're ferry-hopping between fairytale villages or picnicking in the hills above Varenna, this is a destination that invites you to slow down and savor everything. I can’t imagine a more idyllic place to return to again and again.

Things to do in Lake Como

Take a private boat tour from Varenna: A lake tour is a must. We did a private two-hour boat ride with Taxi Boat Varenna and saw Bellagio, Villa Balbianello and secret swimming coves you’d never find on your own. Not gonna lie — we felt like George and Amal.
Picnic in the Alps Above Varenna: With a guide from Trekking Smile, we hiked into the hills for a scenic picnic of local meats, cheeses, wine and breathtaking lake views. This special adventure was a highlight of our week.
Explore Bellagio and Varenna by ferry: The ferry system is easy and scenic. Wander Bellagio’s shops and gardens, then ferry back to Varenna for lakeside gelato and aperitivos.
Ride the Bernina Express to St. Moritz: This UNESCO-listed train route from nearby Tirano winds through the snowy Swiss Alps and is one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world.
Hire a photographer in Varenna: We booked a Flytographer session to capture our memories. Our photographer, Mattia, made it relaxed and fun, and the photos are now our favorites from the trip.
Walk the Greenway del Lago: A flat, scenic walking path along the lake’s western shore with cafes and quiet waterfront towns along the way. Magnificent!
Visit Villa Monastero: Just a short walk from Varenna’s center, this historic villa has dreamy botanical gardens and panoramic lake views.
Places to eat & drink in Lake Como

Cavallino Ristorante Trattoria, Varenna: Locals love this hidden gem. It’s casual, authentic, and you’ll dream about their pasta with lake fish after you’ve gone home.
Il Cavatappi, Varenna: A tiny, intimate restaurant with just a few tables. They have an incredible wine list and handmade dishes.
La Vista at Albergo Milano, Varenna: Reserve a table on the terrace for sunset. The view is jaw-dropping, and the food is refined but warm and welcoming.
Aperitivo on the Varenna Waterfront: I’m not recommending a particular place, just grab a spritz or negroni and watch the ferries come and go. It’s a whole vibe.
Pasticceria Castelli, Bellagio: Charming pastry shop with decadent cannoli, tarts and espresso.
Ristorante La Punta, Bellagio: Perched at the point of the peninsula, this restaurant is all about the view and the fresh lake fish.
Need to know
Renting a car gives you the flexibility to visit off-the-beaten-path villages or drive to the Bernina Express in Tirano. Just be prepared for winding roads and limited parking.
Pack layers. Even in spring and summer, evenings can be cool by the lake.
Don’t rush. Pick one or two villages a day, and enjoy the slow pace. Lake Como is best experienced unhurriedly.
Some ferries and trains may run less frequently in shoulder seasons, so check schedules in advance.
If you're celebrating something special, book a photographer or a private boat ride. It's really worth the splurge.
