Curator’s statement

“Colombia es CHIMBA – let me hear you say it,” our tour guide of Medellín’s Comuna 13 exclaimed. After having us chant along, the local guide, who grew up in the neighborhood explained the popular Colombian word’s meaning: a slang term that’s synonymous with ‘awesome’ or ‘sick’… but it wasn’t always known this way. Older generations may shake their heads, as it once had a negative connotation, and during the city’s peak of violence in the 1980s and 1990s, it was a common word used in Medellín’s street slang. As we walked through Comuna 13, which was once grimly branded as the ‘murder capital of the world’ during years of cartel, paramilitary, and guerrilla violence, we found streets now alive with colorful graffiti artwork and murals, many proudly featuring the word chimba. With the help of new infrastructure, community efforts, and social programs, Comuna 13 is now a bustling area of Medellín filled with artwork, music, and dance—what feel like badges of identity, resilience, and pride of overcoming. Just like the city, the word chimba feels like a linguistic and cultural reflection beyond just a slang word—it’s a symbol of transformation: the community taking something once seen as vulgar or painful and rebranding it as awesome, powerful, and theirs. Locals like our tour guide are determined to showcase more than just the reality of Medellín and Colombia’s safety. They want the world to see the vibrancy, culture, and color that make Medellín the truly chimba city it is today. I’m here to tell you that chimba it was! We spent six days in this lush, historic, and endlessly vibrant city—an experience that felt like a gift at every turn. Here were just a few favorites along the way.

Things to do in Medellín, Colombia

Hotel Quinta Ladera in Medellín

  • Comuna 13 tour: Our guide from Zippy Tours, like all of their guides, had grown up in Comuna 13, offering us authentic perspectives on its history. He shared firsthand stories of how the government long ignored the community’s struggles and explained that, after the 2002 military operation aimed at eradicating paramilitary forces, it’s believed that around 500 bodies were discarded on a nearby hillside—atrocities the government still refuses to acknowledge. It’s an important experience to learn about all that Medellín has been through to become the culturally rich city that it is now.

  • Atletico Nacional soccer game: We attended a local soccer game with Medellín Football Tour, and it was a huge highlight. I’ve never experienced a fan section like theirs: standing on railings, waving hundreds of flags and banners, and screaming chants the entirety of the game (even when the other team had scored LOL…we’re still unsure if they were actually watching?). It was 100% more entertaining watching them than the game itself. From drinking beers at a local bar beforehand and learning the team’s chants, to getting seats right next to the superfans and meeting loads of other travelers, this was such a fun experience.

  • Sunday Ciclovía: On Sunday mornings, a few of Medellín’s busy streets are closed to traffic from 7 am to 1 pm for a weekly event known as ‘Ciclovias.’ We took off for a jog along the route to check it out and found it packed with local cyclists, pedestrians, runners, and families enjoying the urban space with live music, treats, and farmers’ markets along the way. It was a great way to see the city without the heaps of cars and get a glimpse into what weekly life looks like in Medellín.

  • Shopping: Medellín has the coolest specialty shops and clothing brands. Favorites included Velmost, an illustrator who turned his artwork into stylish shirts, hats, towels, and more. His most famous illustration showcases the varying, unique haircuts that represent each part of Medellín, and his artwork communicates a real pride in the city. Another favorite was Ballen, a Colombian accessories brand known for its handbags crafted from local, sustainable materials like vegan cactus leather and acai seeds, all inspired by traditional Colombian craftsmanship and culture. The designer prioritizes slow fashion principles and supports local artisans through ethical production. I was dying to buy one, but it didn’t fit the budget, and surely wouldn’t fit in my already full backpack.

Places to eat & drink in Medellín, Colombia

The Charlee Rooftop - Envy

  • Restaurante Magolos: This cozy spot was chock-full of locals during the busy lunch hour, so we knew it’d be a winner. We enjoyed their classic ‘Menu del Dia’ of bandeja de paisa, a dish that we have eaten every single day without fail because it’s a) cheap and b) insanely good. The classic plate of meat, rice, beans, plantain, avocado, and salad was the best we’ve had yet in an inviting, local atmosphere

  • The Charlee Rooftop - Envy: Medellín has no shortage of rooftop bars, so selecting a favorite is no easy feat. That is, until you have a drink at The Envy. Located on the roof of the chic Charlee Hotel in El Poblano, their views in all directions were stellar for sunset, and their upper deck and DJ table overlooking a pool looked to guarantee a fun night out.

  • PERGAMINO: Being in Colombia, we obviously had to enjoy a few world-class cups of coffee a day. PERGAMINO happened to be my favorite. While the coffee shop crawled with expats from Miami and digital nomads speaking English, its cold brew and outdoor atmosphere are worth swinging by for.

Need to know

Visiting Medellín means not only enjoying its endless offerings but also recognizing the city’s resilience, where so many creative expressions serve as badges of identity and culture. After experiencing it firsthand, I’ll say it loud: Medellín was truly chimba—a destination that deserves a spot on what I hope is now your Colombia-filled bucket list.
