Advisor - Curated Guide to Salzburg: How to Experience Austria’s Storybook City
Curator’s statement

We chose Salzburg as our babymoon destination for its balance of beauty, culture, and calm. An easy place to slow down while still feeling deeply inspired while exploring a new city. Salzburg will always hold a special place in my heart as the setting for a meaningful babymoon. Nestled between the Alps and a storybook Old Town, it’s a city that invites you to pause, lingering at cafés, taking in the historic music that was born here, and soaking up sweeping mountain views. We loved how effortlessly Salzburg balances culture and nature, elegance and ease. It’s the kind of destination that feels deeply restorative without ever being boring. For travelers drawn to history and romance, Salzburg is a true gem.

  • St. Peter’s Abbey (Stift St. Peter): One of the most atmospheric places in the city, St. Peter’s Abbey is a beautiful complex to wander through. Between the abbey church, museum, historic cemetery, and Austria’s oldest bakery, there’s so much to explore.

  • Fortress Hohensalzburg: Perched high above the city, Fortress Hohensalzburg is a must-do for first-time visitors. Take the funicular to the top for impressive views over Salzburg and access to an excellent museum with multiple exhibits.

Need to know

  • Salzburg is wonderfully walkable: The Old Town is compact and best explored on foot. Comfortable walking shoes are essential, as cobblestone streets are everywhere.

  • Plan around peak crowds: Midday can be busy, especially in summer. Early mornings and evenings are quieter and feel more magical, perfect for gardens, viewpoints, and cafés. If you are visiting during the Christmas market season, I recommend visiting the markets during the day for low crowds to do some shopping and return at night to view the beautiful lights and displays.

  • Sundays are very quiet: Many shops close on Sundays, which gives the city a peaceful, local feel. Plan sightseeing, dining, and nature walks rather than shopping.

  • Reservations matter for dinner: Popular restaurants book up quickly, especially in high season. I recommend reserving dinner in advance for a smoother, stress-free experience.

  • Dress for changing weather: Mountain weather can shift quickly, even in summer. Layers and a light jacket go a long way!

  • Music is part of daily life: From churches to historic halls, live classical music is easy to experience without committing to a formal concert. Keep an eye out for small performances and church programs to catch some local music and take in the history.

  • It’s an ideal slow-travel destination: Salzburg rewards travelers who don’t overpack their itinerary. A few well-planned activities balanced with time to wander, sit, and soak it all in makes for the best experience. Salzburg is the perfect destination for a Honeymoon or Babymoon!

  • A great destination year-round: Salzburg is a great travel destination because it offers so much to explore all year. From summer to winter, this historic town offers something exciting for everyone. We visited during the beginning of the Christmas market season while on our Babymoon, and it was incredibly special. We found that a majority of the main attractions were open, as well as restaurants and cafes. We are dreaming of returning in the summer or spring someday for a new perspective on this enchanting city!
