Curator’s statement

What makes Bocas del Toro special is the way locals and expats live side by side, creating an open, welcoming energy and a refreshing blend of perspectives rooted in a shared love for nature. To truly know Bocas is to explore it by boat—the region reveals itself through its mangrove inlets, surf breaks, snorkeling spots, and quiet, sandy coves, many only accessible by water. It’s lively yet still feels off the beaten path, with a collection of close-knit islands that offer something for every kind of traveler. And for those chasing the dream of staying in an overwater bungalow, Bocas offers that barefoot luxury—no long-haul flight to the Maldives required.

Things to do in Bocas del Toro

Yoga studio at La Coralina

  1. Rent a bike, e-bike, or ATV: Explore the main island’s winding jungle paths or cruise through town with ease by renting a bike, e-bike, or ATV. It’s a fun and flexible way to take in the natural surroundings and vibrant street life.

  2. Scuba diving: Bocas offers unique diving experiences, including night dives and explorations of historic shipwrecks that hint at the region’s maritime past. Calm waters and rich marine life make it ideal for both beginners and seasoned divers.

  3. Surfing: Catch some waves at one of Bocas’ reef breaks or hire a boat taxi to reach more exposed beach breaks off the beaten path. A local surf guide can help you find the best conditions depending on the swell, which is essential as some spots only light up with the right forecast.

  4. Bird-watching at Bird Island: Take a boat out to Bird Island, a protected sanctuary home to vibrant tropical species like the red-billed tropicbird and others. You can’t set foot on the island, but you can view birds from the boat, snorkel nearby, or swim through the rock arches on calm days.

  5. Jungle walks & wildlife spotting: Hike through lush jungle trails, especially on Bastimentos, where sloths, frogs, caiman, and tropical birds are commonly seen. Some trails are marked, while others feel more off-the-map—perfect for adventure seekers.

  6. Yoga in the jungle: If you stay at La Coralina there are daily yoga classes offered for guests surrounded by lush trees and sounds of the forest.

  7. Visit a chocolate farm: Discover a permaculture farm on Bastimentos, where you’ll learn about cacao, coffee, medicinal plants, and local wildlife. The tour ends with a bean-to-bar demonstration, lunch, and of course, chocolate tasting.

  8. Snorkeling/dolphin-watching/catamaran tours: Hop on a boat tour through the channels between islands to spot playful dolphins in their natural habitat. It’s a great way to experience the peaceful waterways and wildlife all in one go.

Places to eat & drink in Bocas del Toro

Leaf Eaters

  1. La Coralina Beach Club, Isla Colon: Perfect for a laid-back meal by the water. This is not a spot for swimming with the reef out front, but you can watch the surfers if you’re not taking part yourself. There are lots of lounge chair options if you don’t want to sit at a table. Smoothies here had heartier options for those who like more protein based beverages.

  2. Ohana, Isla Colon: A cozy spot with an ocean view offering a mix of local and international dishes. The ceviche did not disappoint! Also a great brunch option after a morning yoga class in the jungle.

  3. Dosha, Isla Colon: Cute little cafe with relaxed ambiance & a creative menu. Located a bit out of town but on the main road towards Playa Bluff, Dosha Cafe has delicious smoothies, light snacks, and hearty sandwiches. You can even order a loaf of their cocoa bread to take back with you!

  4. Ultimo Refugio, Isla Colon: A beloved spot for locals, expats, and tourists alike! Reservations are recommended, but they’ll seat you if they have space. Also has a full bar & occasionally live music. Great seafood options.

  5. Firefly, Isla Bastimentos: A hidden gem with a focus on fresh, organic ingredients. If you are not a guest there then you must contact Firefly ahead of time to reserve your place for dinner. This is a tasting menu with great cocktails and great people operating it. I recommend arriving to Bastimentos early and walking around before dinner, but don’t miss out on sunset from Firefly!

  6. Leaf Eaters, Isla Carenero: Great lunch spot & ideal for vegetarians and vegans, but plenty of seafood options as well. There’s also a cute little shop in the front of this place where you can find one-of-a-kind souvenirs or some Panamanian coffee to take home.

Need to know

Traveling to Bocas typically requires at least one night in Panama City depending on local flight times. Bring reef safe sunscreen and consider a waterproof backpack for day trips. The largest concentration of restaurants is, of course on the main island, Isla Colon, but water taxis can easily take you to other locations & will often give you their card so you (or the restaurant) can call them for your return trip home.
