Franklin Barbecue: Famous for its brisket and known as one of the top barbecue spots in the country. The wait is long but absolutely worth it.
Uchi: A standout for elevated sushi and Japanese dishes created by Chef Tyson Cole. Ideal for a special dinner or date night.
Perla’s: A beautiful seafood restaurant on South Congress with fresh oysters and a sunny patio that feels perfect for long lunches.
Terry Black’s Barbecue: A reliable Austin favorite with tender brisket, beef ribs, and traditional Texas sides in a casual environment.
Suerte: A modern Mexican restaurant in East Austin known for handmade masa dishes and creative flavors that feel both comforting and elevated.
La Condesa: A stylish spot downtown that offers contemporary Mexican cuisine, great margaritas, and a lively atmosphere.
The Peacock. Located inside the Austin Proper Hotel, this Mediterranean-inspired restaurant offers fresh, colorful dishes and a polished dining experience.
P6: A rooftop lounge overlooking Lady Bird Lake that is perfect for cocktails, small bites, and sunset views.
The Roosevelt Room: One of Austin’s best cocktail bars with an extensive craft menu and a refined atmosphere that works well for evenings out.
Local coffee shops: Austin has a great coffee culture. Popular options include Mozart’s Coffee Roasters, Merit Coffee, and Greater Goods Coffee Co.
Need to know
Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS): The airport is easy to navigate and about 15 minutes from downtown. Rideshare pick-up is simple, and local airport dining includes Torchy’s Tacos and Salt Lick BBQ.
Getting around: Austin is drivable, but parking can be limited in busy areas like South Congress and Rainey Street. Rideshare is the easiest option for dining and nightlife. Renting a car is helpful if you plan to explore multiple neighborhoods or visit Hill Country wineries. Scooters, bikes, and limited rail service are also available.
Best time to visit: Spring and fall offer the most comfortable weather and frequent outdoor events. Summers are very hot, so plan indoor activities during peak heat. Winters are generally mild.
Key neighborhoods: Downtown is walkable and close to Lady Bird Lake and major entertainment. South Congress is known for shopping and dining. East Austin offers top restaurants and cocktail bars. The Domain and North Austin provide a modern, upscale area with retail and dining.
Music and comedy: Austin is known for live music, so checking event schedules ahead of time is helpful. ACL Live and Antone’s are popular venues. Comedy Mothership is highly in demand, so early booking is recommended.
Dining tips. Barbecue spots like Franklin Barbecue often have long lines. Arrive early or visit during off-peak hours. Many restaurants rely on walk-in seating, so having a flexible plan is helpful.
Outdoor activities: Lady Bird Lake, Barton Springs Pool, and Zilker Park are easy to access from downtown. Mornings and evenings are best for outdoor activities during warmer months. Kayak and paddleboard rentals are available at the lake.
Hill Country wineries: The Texas Hill Country is 40 minutes to an hour from Austin and offers scenic, high-quality wineries. Consider a tour or private transportation.
Local culture: Austin is relaxed and friendly with casual dress accepted almost everywhere. Dogs are welcome on many patios and trails, and locals prioritize supporting small businesses.
