Need to know

  • Cyprus in May is warm and sunny, with temperatures between 22–28°C and very little rain — ideal for both beaches and sightseeing.

  • May is shoulder season, so you'll enjoy fewer crowds and better prices on hotels and activities.

  • Renting a car is highly recommended, as public transport is limited outside main cities. It gives you access to remote beaches, mountain villages and scenic drives.

  • The island is divided between the Greek Cypriot south (Republic of Cyprus) and Turkish Cypriot north. You can cross between the two with a valid passport at official checkpoints.

  • English is widely spoken across the island, and most road signs and menus are in both Greek and English.

  • The euro is used in the south, while the Turkish lira is used in the north — though euros are often accepted there as well.

  • When visiting churches or monasteries, dress modestly by covering shoulders and knees.

  • Tipping around 10 percent in restaurants and for services is appreciated but not required.

  • Tap water is safe to drink, although many locals prefer bottled water due to its taste.

  • Look out for the Flower Festivals (Anthestiria) held in May, especially in Limassol and Paphos, celebrating spring with parades and floral displays.
