Day 1: A lively welcome

Begin your day with a leisurely stroll through the cobbled streets, picking up a warm waffle to enjoy as you wander. Then step into the Choco-Story Chocolate Museum to uncover Bruges’ rich chocolate-making traditions and indulge in a few sweet samples. Once your sweet tooth is satisfied, drift along the canals on a scenic boat tour—there are plenty of options by the locks, and gliding under the stone bridges offers a magical perspective of the city’s medieval charm.

Continue on to De Halve Maan Brewery & Brasserie, the last remaining brewery in the city’s center, for a guided tour, a tasting flight of their signature beers, and a bite in the onsite restaurant. Afterward, make your way to the Belfort, Bruges’ most iconic tower, and climb its 366 steps to be rewarded with breathtaking views across the city’s rooftops and church spires.

For dinner, make a reservation at Poules Moules and enjoy a steaming pot of moules frites, paired with crisp Belgian fries. Once you’re full, take a stroll through the Simon Stevinplein Christmas market, where wooden chalets glow with fairy lights and the lively chatter of the crowd brings the market to life. Grab a crêpe for dessert, warm your hands on vin chaud, and linger in the festive atmosphere before calling it an early night to rest up for the next day.

Day 2: Walk & shop

Start your day by joining a free walking tour with Ambassadors of the City. This guided tour will take you through the highlights of Bruges, offering stories that bring its medieval streets and landmarks to life. The tour ends right outside the Basilica of the Holy Blood, where you can step inside to see the famous relic believed to contain “Jesus’ blood.”

For lunch, either visit a local restaurant or stroll back to Simon Stevinplein to grab some croquettes and frites, pasta, or bratwurst from the market stalls. Throughout the city you’ll spot holiday decorations draped across narrow streets, with stalls and shops selling tree ornaments and festive keepsakes that make perfect souvenirs. In the afternoon, visit the Church of Our Lady to admire Michelangelo’s Madonna with Child. As you walk around, pop into some local shops—especially on Stoofstraat—to pick up chocolate truffles or unique souvenirs wrapped in bright ribbons.

Later, make your way toward Minnewater and stop at the Begijnhof, a UNESCO World Heritage site that was once home to the Beguines, women who lived in a close-knit religious community. Its whitewashed houses and tranquil courtyard offer a peaceful contrast to the steady hustle of the city. Afterward, continue on to Winterbar VORST Brugge to warm up with a vin chaud or a hot chocolate while watching the ice skaters glide across the rink. Relax under the heat lamps and the glow of fairy lights for a cozy break.

In the evening, head over to Grote Markt (Market Square) to explore the Christmas market. The crowded square sparkles with twinkling lights while festive music drifts from loudspeakers overhead. Sample some raclette and soak in the lively atmosphere. Take a small break from the market to follow the light experience tour before ending the night with a glass of wine at Blend Wine Bar.

Day 3: Onwards to Brussels

On your final morning in Bruges, have a quick breakfast before taking one last stroll through the Christmas markets to pick up any last-minute gifts or sweet treats to bring along.

The train to Brussels takes only about an hour, making it an easy hop between cities. Once you arrive, drop your bags at your hotel and head out to explore. Spend a little time wandering the city’s streets, from the elegant Grand Place to the 19th-century Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert, where you can admire the glass-covered arcades and pick up Belgian chocolates from one of the city’s famous chocolatiers to bring home.

As dusk falls, make your way into the Christmas markets. Brussels’ Winter Wonders celebration is spread across several squares, with more than 200 wooden chalets offering crafts, gifts, and seasonal bites. Admire the towering Christmas tree in the Grand Place, and if you’re there in the evening, don’t miss the sound-and-light show projected onto the Town Hall and surrounding guildhalls.

Stroll past stalls selling ornaments, sweets, and cozy winter treats, and be sure to grab a Belgian waffle—crisp on the outside, fluffy inside—to enjoy as you wander. End the night at one of the market bars with a vin chaud or Belgian beer before heading back to your hotel to rest up for tomorrow’s day trip to Aachen.

Day 4: Into Germany

Begin your day in Brussels with a free walking tour led by Sandemans New Europe. It’s a great way to cover the city’s major sights in just a few hours—from the Palais Royal de Bruxelles (Royal Palace of Brussels) to the quirky Manneken Pis—while learning about the city’s history along the way. After the tour, grab a quick bite for lunch, then head to the train station for an easy afternoon trip to Aachen. The ride takes no more than 90 minutes, bringing you across the border into Germany.

Once you arrive, head straight for the Christmas markets clustered around Aachen Cathedral. The square fills with festive stalls, and the cathedral itself makes a dramatic backdrop for the celebrations. Be sure to step inside to see Charlemagne’s legacy up close—the Palatine Chapel, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, was where he ruled his empire in the 8th and 9th centuries and where many German kings were later crowned.

Spend the rest of the afternoon and evening wandering the markets, soaking in the festive glow of lights strung across the squares. Unlike the massive markets in Germany’s largest cities, Aachen’s feels more intimate and manageable, while still offering plenty of festive charm. Sample a few German classics along the way: the city’s famous gingerbread, Aachener Printen, fresh pretzels, sizzling bratwurst, and crisp potato pancakes served hot off the griddle.

With the cathedral illuminated behind you and the smell of spiced treats in the air, Aachen makes for a memorable highlight of your Christmas market journey. After a full evening at the markets, return to Brussels for the night.

Day 5: Ease into Luxembourg

On your final morning in Brussels, have a quick breakfast and take one last walk through the city before heading to the train station. Be sure to pick up something to eat for lunch on the train—you’ll appreciate having it during the journey.

The trip to Luxembourg takes just a few hours by train, making it an easy mid-day journey. Once you arrive, check into your hotel and take some time to settle in.

As evening falls, bundle up and head out to experience your first Christmas market in Luxembourg. A great starting point is the Lëtzebuerger Chrëschtmaart in the city center, where classic wooden chalets are strung with lights and filled with handcrafted gifts, tree ornaments, and local specialties.

Admire the Christmas tree, the nativity scene, and the merry-go-round as the market comes alive with music and chatter. Then grab a cup of vin chaud and some raclette, and find a spot on the steps to sit and people-watch before heading back. On your walk to the hotel, take in the glow of the festive lights along the city streets.

Day 6: Holiday spirit

Start your day with the TwentyTour free walking tour, which begins with the changing of the guard outside the Palais Grand-Ducal. Along the way, you’ll stop at viewpoints overlooking the Pétrusse Valley and the Bock Casemates, with sweeping views across the city’s bridges, cliffs, and rooftops. The tour finishes at the Wantermaart, where you’ll have the chance to explore the stalls without the crowds, browsing gifts and admiring the festive decorations that brighten the city streets.

In the afternoon, head over to Kinnekswiss Park for some ice skating. Take a few laps around the rink, then warm up in the chalet with hot chocolate or vin chaud and grab a snack from one of the local vendors before continuing your day.

As evening falls, return to the Wantermaart to experience it at its most magical. This is the largest and most crowded of Luxembourg’s markets, but also the one that captures the city’s holiday spirit best. Ride the ferris wheel, admire the Christmas tree, and enjoy views of the Pétrusse Valley and Pont Adolphe glowing with holiday lights. Snack on Luxembourgish specialties like spinage Kniddelen and Gromperekichelcher (potato pancakes), paired with another hot drink to keep warm as the market fills with festive energy.

To finish the night, make your way to the Sofitel Luxembourg Le Grand Ducal’s rooftop bar, L’Observatoire, for sweeping views of the city sparkling below. It’s the perfect spot to toast the final evening of your Christmas market adventure before heading back to your hotel.

Day 7: Christmas market finale

Your Christmas market adventure is coming to an end today, but there’s still time for one more festive stop before you head home. Begin your morning at Niklosmaart, one of Luxembourg’s smaller markets, where you can see Santa, pick up a last-minute gift, or enjoy a quick seasonal snack.

Afterward, return to the Wantermaart for a final stroll through the stalls. Soak in the holiday atmosphere one last time, and be sure to grab a vin chaud before making your way home. It’s the perfect way to end your Christmas market journey with a touch of holiday magic.

Need to know

  • In Bruges, Simon Stevinplein offers better food than Grote Markt, so be sure to grab a bite there instead of at the more touristy options in Market Square.

  • In Brussels, plan a little extra time to wander between the different Winter Wonders locations, as they’re spread out across the city, and remember that the Grand Place light show only runs in the evenings.

  • In Aachen, the markets can get busy in the evening, so arrive with time to spare if you want to explore the cathedral as well as the stalls—and the wares there are among the best of the trip.

  • In Luxembourg, Mondays are much quieter, as many places (including museums) are closed, so plan cultural visits for another day.

All of these cities are very walkable, and if you’d like to extend your stay, you can easily add a day to explore more in-depth or take a day trip to the Luxembourg countryside. Be sure to pre-book any tours, activities, or restaurant reservations, especially if you’re there on a weekend, to make the most of your time. Just make sure to dress warm and wear comfy shoes, and don’t forget your hat and gloves—it’s the perfect way to stay cozy while soaking up the festive spirit!
