Watch the sunrise on the beach - Did you know New Zealand is the first place in the world to see the new day? There’s plenty of incredible beaches to choose from along the eastern coastline of both islands but my top picks would be Mount Maunganui (Bay of Plenty), Castlepoint (Wairarapa) and Kaikoura Beach.
Cold plunge swims - Whether you’re a Wim Hof fan or not, cold plunge swims offer a refreshing and invigorating wellness experience, boosting circulation and enhancing mental clarity amidst the country’s pristine natural settings. With rivers, lakes, waterfalls and the ocean never far away, there are so many bodies of water to choose from!
Forest bathing - Immerse in the tranquility of lush native bush, reducing stress and enhancing mental clarity through the natural beauty and calming atmosphere of the wilderness. If you need a bit of guidance, check out options with Whirinaki Forest Footsteps, otherwise take your pick from the myriads of serene forest settings found throughout the country.
Hiking, or ‘tramping’ as we often call it in New Zealand, is a favorite past time for a lot of Kiwi’s. Connecting with nature allows us to connect more deeply with ourselves and there’s something therapeutic about traversing incredible landscapes on foot. Embark on one (or more!) of NZ’s nine Great Walks, my favorites are Tongariro Northern Circuit and Milford Track; rough it in the Department of Conservation (‘DOC’) huts or use a guided company like Ultimate Hikes who offer accommodation and meals (for lighter packing) plus knowledgeable local guides.
Biking in New Zealand offers a thrilling way to explore the country’s diverse landscapes, from rugged mountain trails to scenic coastal routes. The nation boasts an extensive network of cycle trails, including the renowned Timber Trail and Alps 2 Ocean, offering both leisurely rides and challenging adventures. Whether you're cycling through the lush forests, along sparkling lakes, or past volcanic landscapes, biking in New Zealand promises unforgettable experiences for every level of cyclist.
Thermal hot springs - Combining the therapeutic benefits of naturally heated mineral waters with the country’s stunning landscapes offers an unforgettable relaxation experience. The central north island is where you’ll find the most geothermal activity so head to Rotorua or Taupō for this experience. Otherwise, Hanmer and Maruia Springs in the South Island.
Stay in a unique and remote accommodation - Disconnect from the hustle and bustle, connect with nature and enjoy the tranquility of the country’s stunning environment in distinctive and secluded settings. Kiwis are known to love camping (in summer months) but ‘glamping’ experiences are quickly taking the country by storm, allowing those who prefer a more luxurious getaway to enjoy connecting with the great outdoors. Te Urewera Treks is an example of a uniquely New Zealand glamping experience which also incorporates Te Ao Maori into your stay.
