Curator’s statement

Marrakech is a unique destination—the blend of French, African, and Moorish cultures coexisting harmoniously is something to be seen. This is especially noticeable in their architecture, from the Islamic design and intricate tilework displayed in palaces and riads around the city. About an hour outside of the city, the Atlas Mountains offer hikes through diverse landscapes and through old Berber communities that still preserve their way of life. Marrakech holds a special place in our travels as it was our first family trip to the African continent. We stayed at The Oberoi Marrakech—the grounds were impeccable and the service was outstanding. One of the highlights is their kids' club, which our kids enjoyed enough to go back the second day, allowing us to enjoy a hammam experience at the spa. The staff at the Oberoi made us feel at home—no request was too small, going as far as crafting a special pasta dish for our picky eater. The Oberoi Marrakech is the perfect hotel for families and an introduction to Africa.

Things to do in Marrakech

Old Medina & Souk Market

Step back in time and take a guided tour through the maze-like alleys of the old medina. Discover a world of vibrant textiles, handcrafted goods, fragrant spices, and authentic Moroccan street food as your expert guide reveals the secrets of this historic marketplace. Having a guide is invaluable, as it's really easy to lose your way otherwise. I wanted to buy gifts for friends and family and our guide knew exactly where to take us.

Jemaa el-Fna Square

Experience the heartbeat of Marrakech at this legendary square. By day, enjoy fresh juice stands and local vendors; by night, watch the square transform into a lively spectacle of snake charmers, street performers, and musicians.

Traditional hammam

Indulge in Morocco’s centuries-old ritual of purification and renewal. A private hammam experience includes the use of black soap, clay treatments, steam, and a soothing massage, leaving you refreshed, revitalized, and deeply relaxed.

Bahia Palace

A masterpiece of Islamic and Moroccan architecture, this 19th-century palace enchants with its lush courtyards, intricate zellige tilework, and ornate ceilings. A must-visit for culture and design lovers.

Jardin Majorelle

An enchanting botanical oasis created by French painter Jacques Majorelle and later restored by Yves Saint Laurent. Wander among exotic plants from across the globe, vivid cobalt-blue architecture, and serene fountains. While the grounds are truly enchanting, the onsite cafe serving international cuisine was underwhelming in both food and service.

Royal Mansour Hotel & Spa

Owned by the King of Morocco, the Royal Mansour is the pinnacle of Moroccan luxury. Admire its lavish interiors, beautiful grounds and a stunning spa. We enjoyed a few hours at the spa followed by lunch at their outdoor restaurant, le Jardin, with just enough time to savor a cocktail at the opulent Le Bar, adorned with gold and pink leaf accents.

Atlas Mountains & Berber villages

Escape the city for a breathtaking hike in the Atlas Mountains to the Imli waterfalls. Immerse yourself in local culture by visiting the Berber communities along the way. The hike was easy and family-friendly—our kids thoroughly enjoyed it. We booked an excursion that included a local Berber guide who provided a wealth of knowledge. We also decided to stop at Richard Branson’s stunning Kasbah Tamadot for lunch, where we sat outside and enjoyed the incredible views of the Ourika valley.

Places to eat & drink in Marrakech

La Trattoria

Dine on authentic Italian cuisine inside a glamorous Art Deco villa adorned with a canopy of lanterns and a large swimming pool in the center. Don't miss the house-made ricotta ravioli—it was my favorite dish.

Le Jardin at Royal Mansour

Tucked within the Royal Mansour’s lush gardens, this Asian-inspired restaurant is the perfect setting for a serene al fresco lunch. We had the vegetable wok and spiced tomato watermelon salad; both were delicious. We paired our afternoon meal with an excellent Aperol spritz.

Dar Dar Rooftop

Set high above the medina, Dar Dar Rooftop blends Moroccan flavors with a contemporary twist. We visited in the late afternoon, sipped cocktails, and watched the sun dip over the city’s rooftops.

Batcha Café

Located within the exquisite Dar el Bacha Palace, this café is as elegant as its surroundings. Arrive early to savor freshly brewed coffee and delicate pastries in a picture-perfect setting.

Nomad

A stylish rooftop restaurant in the heart of Marrakech’s medina that offers modern Moroccan cuisine with fresh, local ingredients and a modern twist. With sweeping views over the spice square and Atlas Mountains, it’s a perfect spot to unwind after exploring the souks.

Need to know

  • When to visit: The best times to visit are between March and May or September and November, to avoid extreme heat.

  • Transportation: It's highly recommended to pre-book an airport transfer to your hotel for the safest and most direct route. When using local taxis, ensure the driver turns on the meter.

  • Currency: The local currency is the Moroccan Dirham. Many markets and small shops only accept cash, which can be withdrawn from a bank ATM.

  • Photography: When visiting Jemaa el-Fna square, avoid taking pictures of snake charmers and other performers, as they will demand money.
