Curator’s statement
Every summer, Oshkosh transforms into the heart of the aviation world during EAA AirVenture. As a local, it’s an experience I look forward to year after year. The buzz of planes overhead, the shared passion among visitors, and the warm Midwest hospitality make this event truly special. Beyond the airshow, Oshkosh and the surrounding Fox Valley offer charming neighborhoods, hidden gem cafés, and a vibrant lakefront scene that many travelers miss. I love helping visitors discover the best of both the event and the community I call home.

Need to know
These are the things only locals and repeat visitors know—small insights that make your AirVenture week smoother, more comfortable, and more memorable:
Avoid traffic with alternate routes
During EAA week, traffic around Wittman Field and major hotel zones can be intense. Use local side roads like South Park Ave, Witzel Ave, or Koeller St to avoid highway gridlock. Arrive early for parking or walk/bike if you’re staying nearby.
Midweek is the sweet spot
If you’re not attending the full week, aim for Tuesday through Thursday. Crowds are still buzzing, but lines are shorter and many key events and forums happen midweek.
Early mornings are magical
The flightline at sunrise is peaceful, with golden light over historic—aircraft and fewer people. It’s the best time for photos, coffee walks, or catching the early bird forums without elbow-to-elbow crowds.
Take a break at Menominee Park
Need fresh air and quiet away from the air show? Menominee Park on Lake Winnebago offers scenic walking paths and shaded picnic areas—perfect for a reset just 10 minutes from the showgrounds.
Book spa or salon appointments in advance
Want to relax after long days on your feet? The best salons and spas (like Mode Salon & Spa or CopperLeaf’s spa in Appleton) book up early during EAA week. Reserve before your trip.
Explore neighboring towns
The Fox Valley includes charming towns like Neenah, Appleton, and Fond du Lac—each with walkable downtowns, riverfronts, shopping, and unique restaurants. They’re great for a day trip or a quiet dinner away from the rush.
Watch the night air show from a distance
Want to enjoy the night air show without the crowds? Try spots along Ripple Avenue, the south side of Lake Butte des Morts, or even a nearby boat launch. You’ll still get views of the aerial displays with less traffic afterward.
Farmers markets & small-town fests
Oshkosh and surrounding towns host weekday and Saturday farmers markets with fresh pastries, flowers, and artisan goods. Appleton’s downtown market (Saturdays) and Oshkosh’s Wednesday market are great if you’re around.
Pack for all weather
EAA week usually delivers at least one rainy day and one hot, sunny day. Pack light layers, a rain poncho, and comfortable shoes that can get muddy—especially if walking or parking in grassy lots.
Plan a rainy-day alternative
If weather delays outdoor events, escape to the Paine Art Center, the Oshkosh Public Museum, or Appleton for the History Museum at the Castle or the Building for Kids children’s museum if you have little ones in tow.
